(Oncorhynchus tshawytscha)
Salmon is a true icon of the Pacific Northwest, and the Salmon fishing Oregon Coast is home to has all the proof you’ll need. Chinook Salmon is by far the most popular of the bunch, but you’ll also see the likes of Coho, Sockeye, and Pink Salmon in the western reaches of the Beaver State. There’s good fishing here for most of the year, so the best time for fishing is almost always now!
When to Go
The first Salmon run of the year starts in spring, and the fishing peaks around the season’s tail end. While the fishing is good from March onwards, especially at the Columbia River, it’s just a small taste of what’s to come.
The summer season is when things really get going. Locals refer to it as the June Hog season, and it’s easy to see why when you’re faced with huge summer Chinook.
Chinook fans will also love the fall fishing season on the Oregon Coast. Starting in late summer, you can expect over a million fish to move into the Columbia River and plenty of other coastal rivers and streams.
November through February is when the local Salmon fishery is at its weakest, so you should focus your attention on other species (like Sturgeon or Lingcod) if you’re planning a winter trip.
How to Prepare
Regardless of whether you plan on fishing with a guide or on your own, you’ll need to buy a valid fishing license (plus a Combined Tag for Salmon) for all anglers age 12 and older. Your guide will supply all the fishing gear you need for the trip, but that won’t include clothing like waders, so be sure to bring your own if necessary.
If there’s one thing the local freshwaters are known for, it’s Salmon fishing. All it takes is one day of casting and you’re hooked for life.
