Salmon (Coho) Fishing in Michigan

There are few better ways to appreciate the 'Great Lakes State' than sampling Michigan Salmon fishing charters. Its 3,288 miles of shoreline are home to many freshwater species but Salmon are the crème de la crème!

When to catch Salmon in Michigan

Michigan anglers are spoiled with happy customers year after year. It’s a well-known fact that Salmon can be found in the big four lakes - Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, Lake Superior. However, you will be pleasantly surprised that the rivers feeding into these lakes are actually the migration routes for spawning Salmon!

The spring, mid-summer, and early fall are the best time for Salmon fishing in the Lakes. If open waters are not something you are after, you might want to head to the rivers in mid-fall to target pre-spawning Salmon. Massive runs of Silvers and Kings ascend the Manistee River, the Muskegon, and Pere Marquette from late September through the peak of October. They are pooled up in deep runs on the reaver in a pre-spawning mode.

How to catch Michigan Salmon

It comes as no surprise that Salmon are one of the most hard-fighting fish. Whether you are trolling for them in any of the Great Lakes or casting somewhere in the rivers, rest assured they will put up a fight. They can make any angler jump with excitement but will also leave them with sore arms.

When fishing the lakes, you might want to go for trolling - the most productive method to land Salmon. Head out into 200’ of water in the heat of the summer or stay within the nearshore waters in the fall. Troll spoons in green, blue, or other colors. Grab a 7-10’ spinning rod and reel and get ready for some fun!

The pre-spawning Kings will easily crush floated skein eggs. Casting thunderstruck crankbaits can also work pretty well if done early in the morning while Chinooks are on the move. As well as that, the good old fly fishing technique can produce a pile of big Salmon. Get ready for an incredible battle!

Seasons

Late August, September, and October are prime months for those who seek pre-spawn Salmon in the rivers and streams. You can also catch the migrating fish in the St. Joseph River as late as Christmas.

If you want to catch Chinooks and Cohos in the Great Lakes, head out anytime from April until October.

Limited on Lakers and caught 2 Chinook Salmon in 3 and a 1/2 hours. Had a blast with Cap and Grant! Well worth the money and went home with with a ton of fish. The owner Adam was also in constant contact with me as well as change our launch to a different time to give us a better chance at catching fish. Couldnt have had a better time with another charter company. Thanks a lot guys!
