Despite their reputation, not all Sharks are hard-fighting, monster-sized fish! Even if you’ve never wielded a rod before, or are traveling with little ones, you’ll find plenty of charters in Orange Beach willing to show you the ropes.
If you’re a newer angler, most captains in Orange Beach recommend opting for a half day trip, where you’ll have the chance to explore the waters bordering nearby Perdido Beach. A favorite technique that captains use with newbies involves drift fishing until the Shark bites. Then, it’s up to you to reel them in – with a little help, of course!
If you fancy your chances against some of the hardest-fighting fish in the ocean, you’ll also find charters offering full day trips out to Orange Beach’s offshore artificial reefs. This is where one of the toughest Shark species lives – the Bull Shark. It’s common for captains to have you bottom fishing for these beasts, using traditional tackle. One thing’s for sure: These Sharks grow to huge sizes here, and when one is on the end of your line, you’ll know about it! A lot of strength and time is required to reel them in, so most captains in Orange Beach recommend these trips for anglers with some experience.
Although Blacktips and Bulls are the most popular Shark species in Orange Beach, captains will also have you targeting Spinner Sharks close to shore. These are smaller in size but still put up a great fight, often “leaping” out of the water.
How to Prepare
Your charter boat will generally come equipped with everything you need for a fun day of Shark-chasing, including rods, reels, bait or lures, and tackle. Your fishing license will be covered, too. Just bring along snacks, drinks, weather-appropriate clothing, and plenty of energy – with the incredible Shark fishing opportunities on offer in Orange Beach, you’ll definitely need it!

We had stayed within an inlet of the gulf and were looking for a simple family friendly fishing trip and that is exactly what we got :) I imagine someone who would describe themselves as an "angler" would know what they are looking for, so I, NOT an "angler" and a first time visitor of Orange Beach, would have a difficult time providing any recommendation other than 'book captain Pat!'

We were busy the entire trip. Lots of hits. We missed several opportunities because of the way King Mackerel and Spanish Mackerel hit the bait. We did have a great haul and it was an exciting trip.

Try to go when the wind is calmer. We could not go as far out to the better fishing area fir fish in season. We caught a huge amount of snapper that was not in season. Lots of fun though.
