Red Snapper Fishing in Texas

Red Snapper
  • Size 5 to 20lbs
  • Food Value Excellent
  • Game Qualities Good
  • Habitats Nearshore, Offshore, Reef, Wreck

(Lutjanus campechanus)

When it comes to the Gulf’s most sought-after species, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better contender for the title than the renowned Red Snapper. Though you might be more likely to associate this fish with Florida, or Alabama, Texas is actually one of the best places to hook this fish, thanks to its multitude of wrecks and structures. In a state where everything is bigger – and, some would argue, better – come discover how this motto definitely holds true for Red Snapper fishing in Texas!

Which charter is right for me?

There’s a reason why Red Snapper fishing is so popular: This species, which loves to hang out around wrecks and reefs, tastes great and provides plenty of hands-on, rod bending action! Because of this, guests of all skill levels can enjoy reeling ‘em in, and you’ll find an abundance of charters offering trips for experts, newbies, and families alike.

One thing to know before you book your trip is that, thanks to its prestigious nature, this fish is subject to closed and open seasons. Luckily, in Texas, you can explore state waters for Red Snapper year round. However, if you want to go seriously far out and increase your chances of landing the big one, make sure you book a federally-licensed charter during open season, usually in the summer. A word of warning: Federally-licensed charters get “snapped” up fast!

North Texas

One word for you: Galveston. This tourist-friendly island city is home to some of the state’s biggest Red Snapper, and is where the majority of federally-licensed charters can be found – good news, because traveling to federal waters is a must! Generally, it’ll be at least 30 miles before you start encountering this species, but if you’re up for the challenge, you’ll be rewarded in kind.

Central Texas

As you make your way further down the coast, the distance you need to travel to hit Red Snapper fishing grounds starts to get much smaller. Head to the sleepy fishing town of Port O’Connor, and you’ll find a wealth of charters ready to take you out to the local rigs about 8 miles from shore, in state waters. This means year-round Snapper opportunities! It also means less traveling time, so newer anglers will find the trip much more palatable.

South Texas

Winter might sound like a strange time to embark on a fishing trip, but head to Port Mansfield and you’ll be rewarded with some seriously incredible Red Snapper opportunities. You’ll find year-round charters on offer, waiting to take you to some of the state’s most productive Snapper spots, such as the Mansfield jetty and its nearby rocks. Even better? You can find them within state waters, making this the perfect location for newer anglers and families.

What should I bring?

This is Texas, so you’ll find that the majority of charters don’t include a fishing license, meaning you’ll need to purchase one yourself. If you want to fish federal waters, however, make sure you choose a charter that includes a federal license. Your captain will usually make sure you’re decked out with all the fishing gear you need, which means you can focus on what’s really important: hooking your very own Red Snapper!

I know you can never do anything about the weather but if you have a trip with wind forecasted be prepared you may not have a great experience and may not catch fish. But as I have always heard and I say, that is why they call it fishing and not catching.

Pay attention to the weather. You want to monitor the rain and wind as much as possible. It will determine how good your first experience turns out.

Galveston gets busy on the weekends. Allow for travel time to get to your pickup location. The weather and water conditions change daily so prepare for that clothing and time wise. Maybe allow for some flexibility in your schedule if time, conditions, and your captain allow for it. Stay in touch with your Captain pre trip.

Listen to Capt. Bubba, he knows his stuff! And, if you listen, you will catch a bunch! Very attentive and helping you with bait immediately to get your pole back in the water. We werenโ€™t professionals and it was nice to have help but not make you feel incompetent.

So according to captain Ryan, fish are shallower than normal at this time of year due to spawning season. We fished in waters right along the bank less than 4 feet deep and the maximum depth we fished at another location was 10-12 feet.

We got caught in a bad week of weather: strong tide, rip current, shoreline flood advisory, and strong wind. BUT, it's spring break so it's not like we picked the date - kids decided to take the chance.

If there is a chance of a windy day, say over 15mph, look for a guide with a big boat. Keeping It Reel has a big boat and it served us well when the wind picked up for a few hours.
