Snook Fishing in Miami

Snook
  • Size 3 to 15lbs
  • Food Value Good
  • Game Qualities Excellent
  • Habitats Inshore, Flats, Backcountry

(Centropomus undecimalis / nigrescens)

Famous for its strength, speed, deliciousness, and putting up a great fight, Snook is at the top of the list for many inshore fanatics. The Snook fishing Miami has in store is more than epic. Just take a trip with a local charter and see why this species is popular among the locals.

What to Expect

The best thing about targeting Snook with the Miami pros is that they'll show you those hotspots and techniques that only locals know about. Some of the most popular fishing locations in the area include Miami Beach, Biscayne Bay, and Flamingo. Snook are known for loving any kind of structure, so you'll be focusing on fishing the honey holes near bridges, jetties, mangroves, dark bottoms, seagrass beds, as well as grass flats and other coastal waters.

When it comes to bait, Snook love ambushing smaller prey, so live and cut bait fish are always a safe choice. Go for shrimp, sardines, mullet, or live pinfish. Night fishing for Snook is especially popular in Miami, and it usually includes trolling with live bait.

These fish also react well to artificials, and local captains will show you how to land them with topwater lures, bucktail jigs, and by trolling swimming plugs. Fly fishing for Snook can also be challenging and rewarding.

If you want to get the most out of your trip, book during summer. This is when Snook fishing is at its peak, but please note that that all fish caught during this season are to be released back into the water!

How to Prepare

Snook fishing is strictly regulated by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission. The species is usually strictly catch and release in December and January, as well as from June through August. As regulations are subject to change, make sure to check with your captain if you want to keep your catch.

During the open season, you can keep up to one Snook per day, as long as you have a Snook permit. Licensed Florida charters will provide all the other paperwork you need.

Most local charters will cover all the fishing gear, lures, and live bait you need. You should bring food/drinks, sun protection, and a camera to capture your next personal best.

Head to Miami and get ready for some exciting, relaxing, and family-friendly fishing for the incredible Snook!

Book with a company whose crew is knowledgeable with the area, time is limited on tours and the best experience comes from local captains who know their spots, like Let it Fly Bowfishing!

Just get out there. Tell the captain what youโ€™re looking to do and theyโ€™ll point you in the right direction.

I was given advice from friends that fishing above the keys would not be that ideal. However, we had a great time and expect to catch more fish in the area soon.

Yes, but know your personal limitations. Choppy water is rough if you suffer from motion sickness. Prepare properly and enjoy.

Focus on the guide, not the boat. You don't need a 30ft boat to run around in the Miami bays and get to the good fishing!

Great time for Tarpon due to the shrimp hatch. Beat the heat. Beautiful weather. Fish at night when there isn't any boat traffic.

Either find a decent charter, have some friends who know the area, rent a boat to get to the spots where others are, or go to a jetty or pier. Can't go wrong with jetty or pier fishing and putting some shrimp/crab/ squid on a setup with a hook and a weight like a Carolina rig. Plenty of exotics in the canals as well that will bite even in December. Just watch for gators and snakes!

Takes no time at all to get to DEEP sea fishing...10 miles and you're at 1,000+ feet. Possibilities are endless but you better be with the right crew and boat or you're gonna have a disappointing day.
