Bluefin Tuna Fishing in Montenegro
(Thunnus thynnus / orientalis / maccoyii)
Charter fishing in Montenegro is always a memorable experience. When the target is Tuna, it’s even more so! Saltwater fishing in this tiny country in the Western Balkans is one of the best ways to experience the Adriatic sea and the prestigious predators that live within it. Adrenaline rushes and physical activity are the rule, rather than the exception on Montenegrin Tuna fishing trips. And that’s not to mention the unforgettable taste of freshly caught Tuna!
The clear blue waters of the Adriatic are a highway for schools of this migratory species. As well as Bluefin Tuna, Skipjack and Albacores visit the local fishing grounds every year. Most captains will fish for Bluefin Tuna in nearshore waters or the open ocean. These fish can come in at up to 3 meters long – so catching one is a real achievement!
Where to go
The Bay of Kotor is known as one of the richest fishing grounds in Montenegro. As well as being home to a huge variety of fish, local towns such as Herceg Novi and Djenovici are popular and scenic tourist destinations. And world-class big game fishing starts just 15 miles from the mouth of the bay.
But Montenegro Tuna fishing isn’t limited to just one spot. Fishing charters in Budva are ready and waiting to take you out to sea to give you your own dose of Tuna. It’s never easy to hook a Tuna, but it’s always worth it!
How and when to fish
Deep sea fishing for Tuna is an art. This fish is one of the most sought-after trophies in the whole of the Adriatic.
Trips usually last at least 6 hours. The most popular and effective fishing technique is trolling. Local captains generally fish with natural bait, with sardines and squid being the most common choice. You can also drift fish for Tuna and throw vertical jigs at the same time, to attract both these and other large ocean predators.
When can you catch Tuna in Montenegro? All year round! Each captain has their own favorite “peak” season. But as a rule, locals say that you can catch the best Bluefin Tuna from August through late fall. They can weigh up to 80 kg (175 lb) at this time of year, although a few lucky anglers have reported catches weighing up to half a ton.
Montenegro’s ocean fishing season runs from April to October or early November. Whenever you go, you’re in with a chance of bringing a real trophy to shore – as long as skill, weather, and (most importantly) fisherman’s luck are on your side. Whatever the outcome, going Tuna fishing along one of Europe’s most stunning coastlines is an experience you’ll never forget!
