Walleye Fishing in Lake Erie

Lake Erie Walleye fishing is exciting, unpredictable, and rewarding. To put it simply, it’s just beautiful. From the sunsets in the western sky to the greatest Walleye catch rates in North America, it’s hard to find a more fulfilling fishing experience.

When to catch Walleye

Because it’s so large, Lake Erie remains cold long after the ice has melted. In February through April, when it’s too early (read too cold) to chase Walleye from the boat, anglers fish from shore during the night hours when Walleye come to feed. If you don’t want to wait until summer, head out for pre-spawn Walleye in the western basin first weeks of April.

The summer months are the prime time for Walleye fishing. July through October is the busiest time for the local captains. Walleye hang out on the depths of up to 46’ of water all summer and come back closer to shore in early fall. An early morning or a late afternoon trip in late October can result in a great number of trophy catches from any of the Lake’s basins.

How Lake Erie Walleye fishing is done

Most of Walleye fishing is done during the day, although it can also be productive to chase the lake’s superstar at night. If you do this you'll get to see how reflective these guys’ eyes are!

If the weather cooperates, take your Walleye by drifting. All of Lake Erie’s captains have drift fishing in their bag of tricks and it’s a relatively easy method to learn. Find a school of Walleye on drop-offs, ledges, channels, weed beds, and other specific floor structures. Hungry Eaters hang out around boundaries between deeper water and shallow feeding areas. Keep your bait at the bottom and the drift speed of 2.0 mph. Whether it's a willow leaf nightcrawler rig or a live bait jig combo, it's all about the presentation, and your guide is likely to tell you why theirs is the most effective.

However, the most popular method is trolling with downriggers or planer boards or flatlining with a diving lure. If your lazy Walleye are on the bottom, combine downriggers with willow leaf rigs with weights. All these rigs can be made at home or purchased at a local bait shop.

The prime season for post-spawn Walleye generally from July through September. Summer is the most productive time for Walleye fishing, especially when the weather cooperates. Most fishing is done far from shore at the mountain to the east and in the trenches to the west. Walleye remain offshore even through October and early November.

We had an awesome time out fishing with Captain Sparky he was fun, professional, very experienced, fully equipped with everything you need to catch fish. He was able to take us to where the fish were and at the end he cleaned up, filleted and bagged our limit of Walleye fish up for us to take home. We definitely recommend this charter, thank you! We started bright and early at 5:30 am. Mark was already there ready and waiting for us. The water was very choppy at first but Mark put us at ease and was very helpful getting us situated on the boat and ready to fish. He knew where the fish were. We caught some nice Walleye and 2 awesome-sized small mouth bass. We had a fun morning of fishing. We would definitely do this again.

"Full Day Charter With Three Lil Birds"

Matt Stenger fished with Three Lil Bird Charters on August 23, 2019

Four of us went out on 8/10/19 for a full day charter to celebrate my father's birthday. It was a perfect day temperature, wave, and wind wise on Lake Erie! We ended up catching about half the boat's Walleye max but would have maxed out had we been able to keep the throw back fish. Captain Sean is a great guy and even cleaned our catch for us! I would recommend this charter experience.
