What to Expect

Within 20 miles of shore, you’ll be out in the Atlantic. Hit "the Straits” for the bite of some magnificent migrating fish as they propel their way past the Keys in search of their next destination.
Aboard a center console or an offshore sportfishing boat, your captain will set up the trolling lines while you take in the vast expanse around you. Sit back and relax, until you hear the screech of the reels and leap into action to battle it out with a true beast of the seas.
This fishing is not for the faint-hearted, so make sure you’ve got your sea legs ready as you rock from side to side, using all your strength to guide your fish to the boat.
Expect the pulses to be racing as you go after some enormous prized Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, and Amberjack. If you’re lucky, you may land a Marlin or a Sailfish, too! How to Prepare
To get to the real hot spots, you’ll need at least 6 hours on the water. Most charter operators in Key Largo also offer reef trips. Some captains will advertise specific trips, but others will ask you to get in touch. Check that your captain is ready to take you offshore.

I think a two hours trip is too short. Better go for the half day one. And be fast when you got something on the hook. Water and sun screen are vital.

I am not very knowledgeable of fishing seasons, but we liked being able to launch from John Pennecamp State Park and fish in some beautiful areas. Weather was perfect. Clear, sunny skies. Hot, but otherwise a great day fishing.

Four hours was about perfect for our children who are ages 10 and 11. I would bring snacks though, so at the end of the charter, they could munch on them.
