Offshore Fishing in Freeport

Offshore fishing in Freeport, TX can be almost any experience you choose to make it! Whether you’re cruising “close” offshore waters for Mackerel and Jack Crevalle, or heading further out to hook Mahi Mahi and more, you’ll be in for the adventure of a lifetime.

What to Expect

Freeport is located along Texas’s upper coast, and provides direct access to the world-famous Gulf of Mexico. This fishery is bustling with an incredible number of species, from reef-dwelling table fare, to notorious shoreline Sharks, to hard-fighting pelagics. It’s easy to see why the Texas Gulf Coast is so popular, and Freeport is the perfect place for anglers of all skill levels to begin their adventure.

If you’re just discovering your sea legs, you’ll find a whole host of charter captains ready to take you to “close” offshore waters. Located around 20–30 miles from the shoreline, you’ll encounter Kingfish, Jack Crevalle, and plenty more. These fish provide exciting rod-bending action, and are a perfect introduction to Freeport’s fishery.

More experienced anglers who are willing to travel further out from the 30-mile mark will generally find themselves bottom fishing the depths around Freeport’s many wrecks and reefs for tasty Grouper and Snapper species. You’ll also be able to target hard-fighting Mahi Mahi, Amberjack, Wahoo, and plenty of others, with trolling being the most popular technique.

Now, this is where the possibilities get really exciting: Freeport is a popular starting point for fishermen looking to explore canyons located around 150 miles from shore. Some anglers refer to these extended excursions as “offshore” trips, but this is more typically known as deep sea fishing. If you’re willing to commit to the journey, you’ll have a chance to hook Tuna, Marlin, and more.

How to Prepare

Charter captains in Freeport will make sure you’re decked out with rods, reels, bait or lures, and tackle. You’ll need to purchase a valid Texas fishing license before your trip. Once you’ve done this, the incredible offshore waters of Freeport’s Gulf Coast are all yours!

What anglers said about Offshore Fishing in Freeport

Weather was perfect, not as humid not salty as expected. We stayed in Surfside at a great rental and ate at Seahorse Bar & Grill. Rental was fabulous and grill was also very good - right on the beach. Great time in Freeport.

Itโ€™s spring when I went, weather is never predictable and neither is fishing! Water was a little choppy on the way out. Fishing with the dolphins playing was a neat experience.

Talk to the captains and update yourself on whatโ€™s hot before going so you can get your target fish. If thereโ€™s not a target just come ready to fight huge sharks. Itโ€™s a major arm workout!!!
