At the crossroads of the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic, Virginia Beach is a real fishing town. Located close to some of the East Coast's premier offshore fishing grounds, you can get the best of both worlds here. Aboard an offshore fishing charter in Virginia Beach, you’ll leave the bay behind and discover the deep waters that plenty of monster fish call home.
What to Expect
At the southeastern tip of Virginia, Virginia Beach is the closest spot in the state to the deep waters. Head through Rudee Inlet, and you’ll discover wrecks, rubble, and deepwater canyons that are overflowing with fish.
On a six or eight-hour trip, you’ll head to the productive spots near the Chesapeake Lighthouse. A little less taxing than the deeper waters, it’s the ideal place for beginners to get the offshore bug. Up to 15 miles offshore, you’ll troll and chum to entice Mackerel, Spadefish, and Cobia. Fill the boat with these delicious fish for dinner.
Around the 40-mile mark, you’ll battle it out with monster Mahi Mahi, bigger Kingfish, and may even land a Yellowfin Tuna. These tough-fighting monsters are famous all over the world, so get ready to work up a sweat to hook ‘em aboard. Even aboard a luxury offshore sportfishing boat, these trips are not for the faint-hearted.
As if that wasn’t enough, in waters as deep as 600 to 1,000 feet, you’ll encounter some even more sought-after fish. You'll need at least 10 hours on the water here, and you could even spend a few nights offshore!
Head to "The Cigar” or the Norfolk Canyon to target White and Blue Marlin, Bluefin and Bigeye Tuna, and even Mako Sharks. Strong, tenacious, and dangerous, these fish will leave you breathless in more ways than one as you enter the fight of your life.
How to Prepare
As you’ll be fishing in deeper, choppy waters, you should have your sea legs ready. If you’re unsure whether you’ll be able to handle it, pack some anti-seasickness medicine just in case.
Don’t let anything spoil your day. Wrap up warm in winter and, in summer, you should wear sunscreen. No matter the time of year, you’ll want a windbreaker to protect against that sea breeze.
Your captain will prepare everything you need for a productive day, including rods, reels, and bait. Bring some drinks and snacks aboard and make the most of your trip.
