What would you recommend to anglers fishing in Ucluelet, British Columbia for the first time?

The scenery is beautiful and we had lines in the water within 15 minutes of getting on the boat. When the water got a bit choppy, we relocated to a more sheltered area with calmer water and we still hammered fish.

First try to book Peninsula Charters, if he’s booked for that time try to change your plans to get him when he is available. We booked an eight hour trip and all three of us limited out on chinook, halibut and coho.

I've been to Ucluelet fishing this time of year before and it's always a great time. What I like about Ucluelet is that you don't have to go far from the dock to start fishing and you don't have to go way off-shore if you don't want to so I think it's a great location for first timers.

Kyle is an extremely hard working guide. My dad and I took my 13yr old son out for his first salt water fishing experience, and it was exceptional. We caught rock fish, a big Ling Cod and two beautiful Spring Salmon. We also caught crab and prawns. It was a great day yet it was looking like the Salmon were a long shot. As the day was winding down Kyle's sheer hustle yielded results. Expectations were definitely exceeded. We'll be back to Ucluelet and we'll definitely book Kyle again.

check clear the meeting point cos’ i was confused the meeting point when the captain just told me to meet at the small blue house. it is because there’s several small blue houses along the harbour.

I don't mean to downgrade and rate a 4-star but I wish I could rate it 4.5 because it was a really good trip but to get a 5-star (great) rating, it would mean we all got our limits on our preferred target fish. Unfortunately the weather prevented that. What can you do...

Go with captain Jeff Richardson, he is great with people of all ages and is a great teacher. He makes you feel very comfortable and has a very positive attitude that is very encouraging and never makes you feel bad or disappointed in your ability or skill level in fishing, plus he has great tips that help a lot!

Fishing in June can be unpredictable. Weather is often non-compliant and travelers should expect both sunny days and/or rain. Depending on the weather, fish can often be in motion and difficult to pin down. Expect to travel to many spots and see a lot of different species.

It gets busy there in the summer - book ahead if possible and find accommodation at the same time, places fill up fast. Catch My Drift charters helped with our booking and suggested places to stay, we'd recommend looking into their charters for sure.

Make sure you bring a cooler and Ice if you plan on keeping fish to cook during your stay or bring a way to store and transport it til you get back to your lodging. It is chilly on the water so bring more layers than you are expecting to need. Rain gear would also be a great idea to have on hand if necessary.

Opt for a seasoned local guide like Captain Scott in Ucluelet who knows the area well. His expertise can make a significant difference, ensuring you have a successful and enjoyable first fishing trip. Ucluelet’s weather can be unpredictable. Dressing in layers ensures you stay comfortable throughout the day. Pack the essentials, be patient and enjoy the experience!

Be sure to bring warm clothing. Although the day of the charter was very windy and cold despite being hot on the previous day. Layers of clothing is the way to dress. And if necessary bring some Gravol if you are prone to motion sickness!

We were told that the season is almost over, so for first timers that want to have a higher lever of certainty, go for early August.

Between the extreme natural beauty of the region and the quality of fishing you cannot go wrong booking a trip in Ucluelet.

take what you can to help with sea sickness, if you're not sure then its better to be prepared. Dress warmly the ocean breeze will go right through your waterproof breathable hiking jacket.

Just listen to your captain, he will direct you with everything you need to know and do

Definitely! We started out by the lighthouse, so along with the fishing there are some cool sight seeing opportunities. Also caught a few Eagles on the way out and in.

Prepare for sea sickness. Local pharmacies can prescribe a nondrowsy bill. Get it. I rarely get sea sick but felt it this day.

When booking I didn’t realise I had booked the whole boat. So my understanding is I could have others join if I wanted, ( wife could have come along)

There is so much choice of fishing charters, read reviews and possibly even visit the harbour to check them out before committing.

Check weather report and dress warm as the weather can change quickly. Please understand that the Captain has no control of the weather.

I would recommend the children take Dramamine or Gravol prior to the experience and dress appropriately otherwise no need to worry about anything. Just enjoy the time. 

In general - take advice from your Captain. He knows the area, where the fish are, and what they are feeding on, when.

Bring clothing for all types of weather as it changes very quickly. Anti-nausea or sea-sickness medication is never a bad idea

If you want larger salmon, then book your trip in the summer month’s. I booked in March to experience the wild majestic scenery of the coast. The size of fish is not an issue for us.

Dress warmly and in layers with a waterproof outer… rubber boots, and a tight fitting hat or toque. A pair of gloves are handy as well.

Bring a good few layers of coats, bring rain gear, bring a camera, expect some fog and expect awesome salmon and halibut fishing.

Be ready for cooler weather despite it being summer to ensure full enjoyment of your trip. It was blowing pretty good and having my bibs and jacket on hand made it comfortable
