Striped Marlin & Dorado Release Near Chi

On the morning of July 28, we began the trip trolling live skipjack tuna (baby skipjack) off Cabeza de Ballena until 8:15 AM, but despite ideal conditions, we didn’t receive any strikes. After finishing with the live bait, we switched to our trolling spread, deploying a combination of artificial lures and rigged ballyhoo (rigger bait). We worked our way east, trolling approximately 4.5 miles offshore and following the coastline all the way to Palmilla, but the bite remained slow. On our return toward Cabo, the action finally picked up off the Fiesta Americana area when a wahoo exploded on the rigged ballyhoo. Unfortunately, after a blistering run, the fish managed to throw the hook and escape. Shortly afterward, a mahi mahi (dorado) aggressively struck one of our Petrolero lures. After a fun fight, the fish was successfully brought alongside the boat and released in excellent condition. On July 19, we departed Cabo San Lucas and headed south in search of billfish. The action came quickly. Just five miles offshore, a striped marlin aggressively struck a Google Eye rigged ballyhoo (rigger bait). After an exciting fight, we brought the fish alongside the boat, where it was safely released in the water without being brought aboard, ensuring a healthy catch-and-release. Following the release, we continued west toward the Lighthouse, searching for additional action, but despite favorable conditions, no other billfish committed to the spread. On July 18, we departed Cabo San Lucas on a 210° heading, making our way toward the Lighthouse. Along the route, we encountered large concentrations of flying fish, a promising sign for billfish activity, but despite the abundant bait, no predators were feeding. We then changed course to the east, and while passing off Pedregal, a striped marlin aggressively attacked our rigged ballyhoo (rigger bait). After an exciting fight, the marlin was successfully brought alongside the boat and released in excellent condition. Following the release, we located a school of yellowfin tuna. Although the fish were visible and actively moving, they remained reluctant to bite despite our efforts, and we were unable to hook one. On our way back to Cabo, a mahi mahi (dorado) struck a purple trolling lure, providing another exciting battle. The fish was landed and safely released. Shortly after releasing the mahi mahi, another striped marlin came up behind a green-and-yellow lure, following it all the way to the boat without committing to the bite before disappearing into the blue.
