The late-August offshore bite from Fort Lauderdale through Miami continues to be a mixed bag, with mahi, wahoo and blackfin tuna providing the better opportunities. Recent reports through August 21 confirm active wahoo offshore and blue marlin farther south off Key Largo. Wahoo: Still very much in play. Recent catches have included quality wahoo, with trolling producing the better opportunities. Sailfish: Scattered summertime sails continue to show. We're well outside the peak winter season, but there are enough fish around to make a sailfish encounter very possible. Mahi: Mahi remain available offshore, particularly around productive weed patches, debris and floating structure. The fish have been somewhat scattered, so finding the right piece of structure holding bait remains important. Tuna: Blackfin tuna are still in the mix, although recent reports indicate the bite has slowed from earlier in the summer. Early mornings remain the better opportunity. Marlin: Blue marlin remain the wildcard. A blue marlin was reported off Key Largo on August 21, confirming that fish are still moving through South Florida waters. For Chase N Dreams Yacht Charters, this remains a good time for Yacht Quality Sportfishing where a day offshore can produce several different pelagic species. The blue marlin season in Bimini may peak during June and July, but the action does not simply stop when August arrives. August and September represent the final push of the summer marlin season—and these closing weeks can still produce the fish of a lifetime. Warm Gulf Stream water, strong current edges, floating debris, weed lines, and concentrations of tuna and mahi-mahi can hold blue marlin within reach of Bimini. August generally offers the more consistent opportunity of the two months. By September, the bite becomes increasingly dependent on water conditions, bait, and weather, but experienced crews know that a late-season blue marlin can appear at any moment. This is not the time for casual trolling. It takes tournament-grade tackle, a professional crew, the right spread, and the willingness to cover water. The reward may be an explosive strike, a screaming reel, and hundreds of pounds of blue marlin launching into the air behind the boat. Why Bimini Island Reigns Supreme for Deep-Sea Fishing Enthusiasts Nestled just 50 miles east of Miami, Bimini Island stands as a premier destination for anglers chasing world-class deep-sea fishing action—and for good reason. Positioned at the edge of the powerful Gulf Stream, this Bahamian hotspot delivers nutrient-rich waters that attract a diverse array of pelagic species year-round. The convergence of warm currents and sudden oceanic drop-offs creates ideal habitat for trophy-sized game fish, making it a go-to location for serious sportfishing. Target species like blue marlin, sailfish, wahoo, and yellowfin tuna are commonly found in these waters, especially during peak seasons from spring through fall. Anglers benefit from shorter offshore runs thanks to the island’s proximity to deep water, allowing more time on productive grounds. Calm backcountry flats also provide opportunities for novice and seasoned fishermen alike to pursue bonefish and permit in shallow turquoise waters. To maximize success, plan trips around tidal shifts and water temperature changes—key indicators of feeding activity. Bring heavy tackle for bluewater battles, and consider hiring a local guide familiar with seasonal migration patterns. Whether you're launching from South Florida or basing your trip on the island, Bimini offers unparalleled access to some of the Atlantic’s most prolific fishing grounds. Discover South Florida’s Premier Fishing Grounds South Florida boasts some of the most productive saltwater fishing waters in the Atlantic, making it a prime destination for anglers chasing trophy tarpon and billfish like sailfish. The region’s intricate network of inshore flats, deep-sea drop-offs, and thriving reef lines creates ideal conditions for year-round sportfishing. From the bustling channels of Fort Lauderdale to the open waters off Miami, understanding the seasonal patterns of key species is essential for a successful outing. Tarpon peak in the summer months, often rolling near the surface in coastal estuaries and around bridge structures, particularly in the early morning or late evening. Anglers targeting these silver kings should focus on moving tides and use live bait such as crabs or mullet for best results. Meanwhile, sailfish season runs strongest from November through April, with the offshore waters near the Gulf Stream delivering fast-paced action on trolling spreads rigged with ballyhoo. To maximize your chances: Time trips around seasonal migration patterns Fish during tidal shifts for increased bite activity Utilize light tackle for greater sport when battling large game fish Stay flexible with location based on recent catch reports Whether you're exploring the Intracoastal or venturing into bluewater territory, South Florida offers diverse angling opportunities for all skill levels. This time of year is one of the most exciting windows for offshore fishing out of Fort Lauderdale, with warm currents, bait concentrations, and migrating pelagics stacking the odds in anglers’ favor. But while South Florida delivers excellent action, experienced anglers know that stepping just a bit farther offshore—to Bimini, the Bahama Bank, Cat Cay, and Tuna Alley—can turn a great fishing trip into a truly elite one. Let’s break down what’s biting, how we fish it, and why the Bahamas consistently outproduces local waters. What’s Biting Offshore of Fort Lauderdale Right Now Fort Lauderdale’s proximity to the Gulf Stream puts deep blue water just minutes from the dock. This creates ideal conditions for fast-moving pelagic species, especially during peak seasonal transitions. In-season species include: Sailfish – Active along current edges and temperature breaks Wahoo – Fast, aggressive, and explosive strikes Mahi (Dolphin) – Found on weed lines, debris, and rips Kingfish – Common on edges, bait schools, and reef lines Fort Lauderdale offers excellent fishing — but the Bahamas is a different league altogether, which is why anglers consistently turn to Bimini Fishing Charters when they want more bites, bigger fish, and less pressure. ? Cleaner Water & Less Pressure Bahamas waters see significantly less boat traffic. Fish are more aggressive, less educated, and more willing to strike. ? The Bahama Bank Advantage The Bahama Bank creates massive nutrient upwellings where shallow flats meet deep blue water—ideal conditions for predators. ? Tuna Alley A legendary migration corridor producing Wahoo, Tuna, Mahi, Sailfish, and Marlin year after year. ? Cat Cay & Bimini Perfectly positioned along migration routes, these areas allow Bimini Charters to reach prime fishing grounds within minutes of setting lines. What You Can Expect Fishing the Bahamas Right Now Current Bahamas targets include: Wahoo – Often larger and more aggressive than Florida fish Mahi – Strong numbers along weed lines and debris Sailfish – Consistent action along current edges Tuna – Especially prevalent in Tuna Alley Blue Marlin (seasonal) – Legitimate trophy opportunities Multiple Wahoo hookups in a single day are far more common here than in South Florida—one of the main reasons anglers book repeat Bimini Fishing Charters. Local Fishing vs The Bahamas: The Real Difference Local Bahamas Fort Lauderdale Offshore Bahamas Offshore Excellent local action Multi-species, trophy potential Heavy boat traffic Clean, lightly pressured waters Seasonal peaks Consistent productivity Short runs Immediate access to prime grounds Final Thoughts Fishing Fort Lauderdale this time of year is outstanding—fast-paced, exciting, and accessible. Bahamas Fishing, Higher Fees, Fewer Boats The Best Fishing We’ve Seen in Years, Bimini Fishing Charters Over the past year, traveling to the Bahamas by boat has changed dramatically. New Bahamian Customs, Immigration, and fishing license fees have increased the overall cost of entry for private vessels and charter boats alike. In many cases, these increases have resulted in 250–350% higher total entry costs, causing a noticeable decline in the number of boaters crossing over to the islands — especially to Bimini. While higher costs have slowed overall traffic, they’ve also created an unexpected silver lining for serious anglers and luxury charter guests: Bimini fishing is as wide open as it’s been in years. The Reality: Rising Costs Are Keeping Boats Home. Recent changes to Bahamian entry requirements now include higher fees for: Customs & Immigration processing Fishing permits Vessel cruising permits For many private boat owners, especially those making shorter trips or weekend crossings, these added expenses have made Bahamas runs far less frequent. As a result, overall boat traffic to Bimini has dropped significantly compared to previous seasons.
