Background
Captain Jeff is a lifelong lowcountry resident with many years experience in the local waters. Along with his fishing, he has 29 years working as a wetland ecologist for the South Carolina Coast Zone Management Program and the Ashley River Special Area Management Plan. He has received recognition as an expert in the areas of wetland identification, delineation, and ecology by the South Carolina Administrative Law Court, the Southern Environmental Law Center, and the Scenic Ashley River Advisory Council. There is no better environmental guide for your tour of Charleston Harbor and the Ashley River. Your Captain is a graduate of Presbyterian College and spent his entire life exploring the forest and fields, the marshes and waters, the wetlands and environment of coastal South Carolina .
Techniques
Captain Jeff prefers fishing the salt waters. He is experienced in both inshore and offshore fishing. His main emphasis is offshore including bottom fishin for the wide variety of reef species, and trolling for dolphin, wahoo, and black fin tuna. Bottom fishing is mostly done using medium bait casting gear and chicken rigs. A chicken rig is a weighted set up with two or more hooks. It is not uncommon to bring in multiple fish at a time. Black sea bass, vermillion snapper, red snapper, trigger fish, porgies, grouper and grunts are a few of the great eating fish caught on a typical trip. If you want a "reel" battle, large amberjack are always there for your fighting pleasure. Aj's range from 15-70 pounds and can really test your endurance. Cobia is another great fighter and make excellent eating. And sharks always make for an exciting experience. Come join Captain Jeff and Olde Man Charters for a great time exploring the historic Ashley River or catching the fish of a lifetime.

We took our family of 4 out with Jeff for a full day of bottom fishing. He and his first mate were very knowledgeable and helpful. They put us on the fish and were quick about re-positioning so that we could catch as many as possible. We will be back as soon as we can!

Thanks,
Sam

I had a wonderfull half day trip with my son.  We caught over 50 black sea bass with our limit of 14 keepers, plus a monster red snapper.  I would highly recommend this charter as the captain was very knowledgeable and worked hard to keep us on the fish.  When I am returning to Charleston I will be using this charter again.

Thank you Jay. I try to do the best with what Mother Nature gives me but she was not very generous weather wise for us. I look forward to our next trip with calm seas and bent rods.

I have been fishing with Captain Jeff for almost a year going back to summer 2015! He is extremely knowledgeable about where to find the fish and we’ve never gone home empty handed! If you’re chasing Marlin, Sailfish, or Dolphin and the bite slows down, he will pick up the gear so we can put some bottom fish in the boat. This is also a very safe charter and he keeps the boat in tip top shape. Equipment and gear is great shape and is well taken care of. Proper equipment is on board to ventilate species which can’t be kept.

He’s great at keeping up with his customers and communication is wonderful. I’ll continue to fish with Jeff as he’s always been accommodating and goes with a plan that works every time!

Be sure to bring a cooler when you leave the boat to head home because it will be full every time!

Attaching photos of some of the other guys on our trip too.

Jeff put us on live bottom and other structure all the way out to 100 feet of water, and all the way back in. We caught scamp grouper, gag grouper, trigger fish, more than our limit in vermillion snapper, as well as many other species. Not only did Jeff get us out to the best spots, but he helped us pick the perfect day. Conditions were great, making the ride out and the ride back in really, really, smooth. And that boat is a real beauty, and kept meticulously clean. Thanks Jeff.

I have been offshore fishing several times with Capt. Jeff Thompson since spring of 2015 and all have been memorable experiences.  Great people I’ve met, fishermen, fisherwomen and experienced mates with decades of saltwater experience.  The boat is always clean and a pleasure to fish and cruise.  The most recent trip we trolled for mahi and fished bottom for grouper, snapper, triggerfish, grunts and black sea bass and came back with a full cooler of quality fish.

For those that enjoy photographing nature like me, I have Go Pro underwater videos and still shots of mahi, tiger sharks, pilot whales, flying fish, sea turtles and every time I go out, I see and capture something new….it never gets old.  When a flock of birds are gathering and diving, Capt. Jeff is on them, its time to put the camera down and get on to serious fishing.

Having been on a number of charters on the Atlantic and Pacific, some good and some bad, I would put Olde Man Charters on the top of the list hands down and plan on a few more trips with Capt. Jeff this year.
