Background
A person is very lucky if they love their job. I'm pleased to say, I'm now a very lucky person because I run the Montauk charter boat Grand Slam. This was not always the case because for 20-years previous I was a member of two New York City Law Enforcement Departments. This initial career choice may have delayed "my luck" for a period of time, but being "on the job" gave me the opportunity to retire at a relatively young age. So, in 2006 I switched professions to pursue my long simmering obsession with the striped bass. An obsession with a fish may seem strange to normal people. However, in my world, it was destiny a long time coming.
Techniques
I have an obsession with striped bass fishing. This wily species of game fish has had an incredible hold on me since my early teens. In relation, I began fishing Montauk Point in the 80's, and from the first time I dropped a line in the pristine, fertile waters of the Point I've been hooked on fishing there ever since. In my opinion, the prime times to be fishing for striped bass off Montauk is from late June until mid-October. On the Grand Slam we do both day and night striper fishing trips. However, if you wish to experience the true aura and mystique of striper fishing, I'd highly recommend a summer nighttime excursion with us on the water. Summer weather off Montauk is very stable, with warm S/W winds being the norm, these types of winds produce optimal fishing conditions during "moon tides" when big striped bass will normally feed aggressively.

Capt Tom knows his way around Montauk Long Island like you know the way to the bathroom in the middle of the night. His concerns for client safety are apparent as soon as you step aboard his boat, The Grand Slam. What’s more, Capt. Tom knows how to put you on fish. He is equally concerned that his customers have a good time and are catching fish. Capt. Tom is an experienced expert and wrote a book titled, Bass Buff- A Striper Fishing Obsession Guide. He doesn’t hold back any tactics or techniques in his how-to book or when you are aboard Grand Slam Charters.  We had two trips on Grand Slam Charters and he always does the right thing. Fishing around the historic Montauk lighthouse and the views are an added bonus. Professional, experienced,  courteous, knowledgeable—two thumbs up and 5 stars.

Had a great day fishing on The Grand Slam with Captain Tom Mikoleski. We started out the day fishing for Striped Bass at Captain Tom’s favorite spots and had a good showing of bass to 30 lbs. When the tide slacked off we traveled for about 15 minutes and switched to Seabass and Porgies. The action was constant as we picked away at many large Seabass and Porgies and even a few surprise Fluke mixed in. When we had our fill of these bottom fish Capt. Tom asked if we wanted to try for some more Fluke in another spot, or go back to Striped Bass, we chose Striped Bass to finish off our trip. We had a great day fishing with Capt. Tom and crew on The Grand Slam and would recommend this boat to the seasoned angler or the beginner.

We’ve all heard “It’s getting late let’s move spots to a bit closer to home.”  On the Grand Slam you hear Captain Tom give a time check, and fair warning to get a seat for a ride to a small window of fish. I’ve heard it twice in quite as number of trips with Tom.  The first time it led us to a Block Island Sound Symphony of tides, moon, and wind that drifted us over the right boulder field.  Like the title says, a few minutes into the first drift a 40 pounder freight trained an eel on a circle hook.  There was no screaming of not setting the hook, just good solid advice during the fight and a mate always thinking two steps ahead.  Next drift same routine.  Missed getting right in the water on the next drift and didn’t connect, the drift after lightning struck again.  You don’t forget trips like that.

The second time I heard Tom telling us to secure the deck for the dash to Block was a different night.  Not a bird, a splash, or a blip of a fish at the point.  After finding the only life in the area were random blues or a dog, we started realizing how wrong the weatherman had been.  SW 5-10 was W 25, and 2-4 was 8-12 with the tide not playing ball.  I’m not an offshore warrior nor a guy that’s scared of chop in the right scenario.  I’m also a husband and a dad.  The ride home could have gone real wrong without Tom handling a boat that’s built like a tank and can haul ass.  Ended up being an at ease trip back while watching the Point flex her muscles.
