- Background
- A person is very lucky if they love their job. I'm pleased to say, I'm now a very lucky person because I run the Montauk charter boat Grand Slam. This was not always the case because for 20-years previous I was a member of two New York City Law Enforcement Departments. This initial career choice may have delayed "my luck" for a period of time, but being "on the job" gave me the opportunity to retire at a relatively young age. So, in 2006 I switched professions to pursue my long simmering obsession with the striped bass. An obsession with a fish may seem strange to normal people. However, in my world, it was destiny a long time coming.
- Techniques
- I have an obsession with striped bass fishing. This wily species of game fish has had an incredible hold on me since my early teens. In relation, I began fishing Montauk Point in the 80's, and from the first time I dropped a line in the pristine, fertile waters of the Point I've been hooked on fishing there ever since. In my opinion, the prime times to be fishing for striped bass off Montauk is from late June until mid-October. On the Grand Slam we do both day and night striper fishing trips. However, if you wish to experience the true aura and mystique of striper fishing, I'd highly recommend a summer nighttime excursion with us on the water. Summer weather off Montauk is very stable, with warm S/W winds being the norm, these types of winds produce optimal fishing conditions during "moon tides" when big striped bass will normally feed aggressively.
