Background
Captain Bill is a fourth generation fisherman who started his angling career at the age of five when he worked as a bait boy on his father’s boat. By the time he was 24 he had his captain’s license and was running charter boats for other captains. Eventually getting his first boat the “Southern Belle” in 1996, he moved the business to Virginia Beach in 2002 and hasn’t looked back since.

I just love to see folks catch fish, especially kids. I am incredibly blessed to be able to meet new friends every day, and show them a bit of the great fishing Virginia Beach has to offer.

We had a great crew fishing Sat, and the weather couldn't have been better! After catching some small bluefish trolling, we moved over to the CBBT and did some light tackle fishing for them and had a blast. Cobia… Read Full Report →

Great experience all around and caught a ton of Spanish Mackeral. Highly recommend!  Both the Captain and Mate were grear guys.  We really enjoyed the day.    Fishing on a piece of history on this true classic custom Carolina Sportfisherman was awesome.  Me and my boys had a great time.

First, it is important to note that Capt Jenkins and his mate Luke were very nice and professional and the boat was fine. The process started off by us trying to book with a different boat named the Veteran for my 50th birthday. We were reassigned the Legacy with Capt Bill Jenkins. We rolled with it. I made sure to contact the Capt prior to our trip because I wanted to make sure we did some shark fishing part of the time. I was taking my two sons on their first charter boat. I wanted to fish for sharks and the Capt agreed. The day of, we trolled for 5.5 hours. We trolled the same set of waters off Va Beach with one hard troll run off Sandbridge. The Captain showed no imagination as we fished the same depth ratios, no cut bait hit the water. Our trip was all spoons though he did move to smaller gauge gold spoons to mix things up. All day = no fish, no fish seen, maybe one bite. I noticed we were trolling with no change up for several hours but I didn’t say anything to the Capt because half way through the charter he dropped down and mentioned he “was not a clock watcher” and asked us to be patient. I took this as an indication some change up in strategy was coming. I figured we’d get to dropping bait. After 5 hours, I asked the mate about shark fishing and he stated, “we didn’t set up for chumming and that type of fishing today. I was surprised by that statement.  I was more surprised when we pulled into Rudee Inlet and I asked the Capt about not dropping lines for sharks as agreed on the phone several days earlier. He indicated that another boat told him over the radio that sharks were not biting in the shark area he usually fished. This was inconsistent with mate’s report that they had not equipped the boat for shark fishing that day. I didn’t confront the Capt with the inconsistency because I’ve fished for 46 years of my life to date and I know that there are no guarantees about catching fish when fishing. To add, I know all Captains want their customers to catch fish and Capt. Jenkins did give us an additional 1.5 hours of unimaginative but free trolling toward that effort. The BS answer and overall experience is better captured by 2.5 rating but when forced to choose, I went 2.  He did offer us $150 discount for ta future trip. Would have preferred trip as agreed on phone this time than future discount.

So Sorry that you had a less than great day, we did our very best to try and catch you fish. As I mentioned to you at the conclusion of the trip, out of the 6 boats fishing there were only 5 fish caught, not including the one we lost. As for the depths, if you saw my chartplotter and depth machine you would have known that I ran a continuous S pattern from 15 to 40 foot of water. I did this in an effort to find the bait/fish and water temperatures above 63 degrees. The winds had pushed cold water in from Cape Henry to below Sandbridge and shut the fishing down all around us. The mate, as good as he is, had not spoken to the other capt that had tried shark fishing with no luck, and had no knowledge of that capt giving up and going back to trolling. Thats not really the mates job, and i apologize for not conveying that to you in a more effective manner. I did give you and extra hr and a half and a huge discount on your next charter,  which no other capt does. As far as agreeing to certain fishing on the phone days prior to fishing, certainly no one can predict the constantly changing weather or fishing conditions and we take all of that into consideration when deciding on the best bet to catch fish. Sometimes, it just doesn’t work out. We can’t change the conditions we just try to work around them. Again, I apologize for a less than desirable day, I wasn’t happy with the outcome either. There’s only so much imagination one can exercise when saltwater fishing, as this particular day the conditions beat us, not the fish.

Fast and on time. I been off shore 20 sometimes and never have I go to the fishing grounds before the sun shows it self. Morning bite is the best. Thank you for a grate day on the water captain.

Fish weren’t very active.  Captain Bill worked hard to get us on fish, and stayed out longer than required to land one for my son (9).

This was the first time I took my two year old daughter on a charter. Captain Bill was patient and knowledgeable . My wife and I caught plenty of Spanish mackerel and blue fish. We had a fantastic time.
