Placencia, Belize

Background
I was born to a lifetime fisherman and his wife. His father, and his father before him, were fishermen of the sea. The family owned an island (Caye) 9 miles from the mainland of Placencia Village. Before engines they would paddle out to the Caye and beyond, to catch and salt the fish, storing it to take to the fishing co-op where it was sold. I continue this tradition today, transitioning from a family fishing for food to fly fishing as my profession.
Techniques
Fly fishing in Belize for permit, tarpon and bonefish is traditionally done as catch-and-release only, although the growing competition among locals has forced many of the local fishermen to use live bait, getting more results but losing the most sat
