- Background
- Captain Steve has been fishing and guiding in Florida since 1997, and has over 40 years fishing experience which has seen him fish inland lakes and rivers throughout North America, as well as the Florida Keys region. The Florida Keys offers unique fishing opportunities in that there are over 30 different species of fish to target. If one species is not biting you can change it up and target another. That is one reason why Islamorada, Florida Keys is known as the fishing capital of the world and that is why he picked this region to start a charter business. He is also an expert fly fisherman for Salmon, Steelhead and Trout. He spent many years fly fishing the tributaries of Lake Michigan and the rivers, streams and lakes in Montana. He loved the year-round fishing scene in Florida so much, that he started his Florida FIshing Headquarters Charter business in 1998 and has not looked back since. He holds a USCG Captain’s Licence and is an Everglades National Park approved guide.
- Techniques
- We will mostly fish with spinning gear. Light, medium and heavy, depending on the situation. I have conventional gear for the really big tarpon and shark. My Tarpon trips are evening only (tarpon are nocturnal feeders). Low light conditions are best for tarpon. Tarpon trips can be booked from late March thru June (tarpon season). Evening Tarpon fishing trips are 5pm-9pm early Spring and 6pm-10pm as season progresses. Also, run a combo trip 2pm-9pm early Spring and 3pm-10pm as season progresses. The combo trip takes us into the backcountry for trout, snook, reds, shark.. etc then transitions into evening tarpon fishing. We fish for tarpon with live bait on heavy spinning and conventional gear.
