Took my three boys on a half day trip and Capt Manuel and Jose made the very best of some rough seas for us.  Although we did not make it the whole time, due to the swells my 16 year old was able to catch a Mahi Mahi which was the only fish he really wanted to go after.  We pulled up two Amberjack and one Mahi, before just being overwhelmed by the sea conditions but we knew it was going to be rough before we left and decided to stick it out and hope for the best.  Capt Manuel and Jose were very professional and awesome, they explained everything in great detail and were so helpful the entire trip.  When we return to the Dominican Republic we will be sure to book another trip on the Barbie.

Captain and first mate were great. Caught 7 Mahi, 1 barracuda and one other fish. They worked hard to keep seaweed off lines baits fresh, and everyone comfortable. My wife and I had a great trip even though no marlin this time. We will book with the Barbie again . The whole experience from planning to getting back to the hotel was well done.  Big thank you to Dr. Sonji and the crew.

We booked a half-day trip for 2 adults and 2 children aged 11 and 13. The transportation from the resort went well and the driver was punctual and polite.  The Captain and First Mate met us at the marina when we arrived. Our first impression of the boat was great. The boat was extremely well maintained and all equipment was prepared and ready to go!  We set out at ~0830.  The sea was fairly active as we headed out but the waves were not quite white capping. The First Mate deployed the bait and lures and we began fishing once out on station. Unfortunately, my son became ill but, after a spell of sea sickness, was able to relax in the stateroom.  Immediately following this, we hooked a 75” White Marlin. I jumped in the chair and brought it in after about 20-25 minutes. I was exhausted but elated.  The experience of seeing the fish jumping out of the water as I fought it was exciting for the rest of the family. Following the catch, we decide to return to the marina due to my son’s episode. Even though we cut the trip short, it was worth every second that we were on the water. The crew was understanding, very professional and assisted with my son while he was seasick (Big Thanks!!).  The trip definitely has us wanting to go Marlin fishing again this summer.  I recommend the Barbie for anyone wanting a great experience!

We had a wonderful time.  The captain and his mate knew what they were doing.  Although we only got one fish it was exactly what we were looking for, a 81” white marlin!  I’ve charted boats in Costa Rica and Florida and I would recommend the Barbie and its crew over any of my past experiences.  I will use my experience on the Barbie as my standard for excellent service!  (I hope this is accurately translated to the captin and his mate).  Highly recommend.

All the negative review were mainly the fishing area of the boat. Had not enough setting for 7 people to set or fish comfortable. Would not do it for more then 3 people. Was very pleased with captain and crew.

Dear Mr. Reale,

Thank you so much for your sincere words. To clear things out, our vessel is equipped to accommodate a maximum passenger capacity of 8 people and even with this capacity, we only limit the number of anglers to 6 people due to safety reasons. On every charter, our crew usually accommodate customers with 3 anglers in the console tower or cabin and 3 people in the fishing stern for maximum safety and comfort. We detailed all this information and maximum capacity in the charter’s description prior to departure and you agreed to our policy when booking the charter.

However, I find this review very surprising. It seems odd to me that you wrote a negative comment about our fishing area capacity, when the day before your charter, you asked us for the favor of accommodating an extra passenger and in good faith we agreed, because we believe that customers are always first and we strive for the best quality charter experience in Punta Cana. As I said, you asked us to accommodate an extra person and without any charge, we politely made an exception to our rules as we wanted you to share the experience with your entire group. And now, you claim that the stern area was not enough when we agreed to your own requests of adding an extra angler.

I believe it is a bit unfair to make this claim, when we were more than accommodating to your request. All we wanted was to provide an excellent service and customer satisfaction. Therefore, I wanted to clear out that it was you, the customer, who in fact wanted to have an additional angler above our recommended capacity of 6 anglers and we made the miscalculated decision of allowing it. Because of your accommodation request, you possibly felt that the area was not comfortable enough as an extra person can make a big difference. This is the first time that a customer make such claims and we wanted to point out that the Barbie is more than comfortable and adequate for a recommended group of 6 people as evidenced by our previous positive reviews. If a customer wants a bigger boat with a bigger stern, I believe FishingBooker has a variety of 60+ foot sport fishing vessels in CapCana Marina but at a higher price for customers who can afford it.

Regardless of this misunderstanding, I wanted to again thank you for choosing Barbie Fishing Charters for your experience. In fact, my Captain told me you had an amazing catch! You may find a picture of your catch in this review and evidence of our communication regarding the extra passenger. I hope you have a safe flight home!

Sincerely,

Dr. Sobrino

From start to finish our experience with the Barbie and crew was fantastic. Easy to book, and open lines of communication. Dr. Sobrino stayed in contact and arranged transportation for us (we stayed in Punta Cana).

Manuel and Ivan (captain and mate) never stopped hustling. We had consistent action all day and ended up going 3/7 on white marlin and 1/1 on blue marlin, all catch and release. Ivan is easily one of the hardest working first mates I’ve seen. Not only hard working but friendly and and fun to be around. The boat was also stocked with plenty of food/snacks and cold drinks.

I would highly recommend fishing on the Barbie. We will definitely book again when we return to the DR.

We had an interesting trip. I checked weather forecast and was 12 knot winds and 4.2 waves. There were 8 people on board plus crew. There was a mix up on payment which was completely my fault but got it done. So in midst of getting payment set up capt and mate didn’t give us their names no big deal. Figured we’d get it at some point during trip. Started out in trip and seas were 6-8ft with larger at times. Winds weren’t too bad.
In our group we had ages from 13-74. An U.S. Army Vet, a Navy Vet, and a current U.S. Army ROTC Cadet. We are not new to water and fishing by any means. We have been on many charter boats throughout the years and enjoy every one of them, after all a bad day on the water is better than a good day at work.(LOL) After 2 hours of rough seas everyone was sick. I owe capt and mate an apology as I know we left head in bad shape.(so sorry about that). At that point I decided to end trip so we trolled back to dock. We had 3-4 hook ups and got 1 Mahi Mahi schoolie in the box.
Later that day I got a personal text from Dr. Sobrino refunding half of my money which I thought was very nice because I hadn’t asked for anything. He runs an excellent business and top notch vessel and crew and gear. Will go with The Barbie agin when we come back to the Dominican Republic in the future. Thank you again Dr. Sobrino and capt and mate. Still didn’t get their names

Dear Mr. Van Horn,

We apologize for the negative experience. We really want our customers to have a great time! Sorry to hear that some people in your group got sick. Next time, I recommend to take some Dramamine or Scopolamine patches in order to avoid seasickness. As for the weather, it is something we can’t control. As you said, the forecast was favorable but the Caribbean sea can be sometimes unpredictable and might change rapidly. It is up to the Captain to reschedule or cancel the trip if weather turns unfavorable. As we are responsible for our customer’s safety, we had to cancel the trip. In this cases, we give refunds to our customers as detailed in our policies. Regardless, at least you had a small Mahi-mahi! Better than nothing! I promise you that next time, the experience will be much better! I hope you come back soon! Hope you had a safe flight home!

The captain should have never taken us out, the four of us bounced around like pinballs in his old broken down cabin, on 8 waves, took us back in after 2 hours, still demanded his full fee, had four minnows out skipping across the top of the waves full of seaweed, total disaster!!

Dear Mr. Gory,

We deeply apologize for your negative experience at the Barbie. It is not who we are and what we strive for. As evidenced by our previous reviews, we run our operation very diligently. I can assure you that my operation is characterized by the highest standards of quality, professionalism and discipline in the Punta Cana tourism industry. We invest a lot of time, effort and resources in keeping our boat up to date and our equipment well-maintained. In addition, we constantly train our staff in order to provide the best fishing charter experience in Punta Cana. Personally, I have made sure that my staff is highly qualified for the job. Until now, they have demonstrated excellent client satisfaction and have provided the necessary safety and security for all fishermen on board.

As we take our customer’s feedback very seriously and I’m a very objective person, I decided to further investigate the facts of what really happened during your charter in order to improve our charter experience. Today, I discussed with my Captain about your concerns regarding your charter experience and he expressed that during your charter, weather was favorable with 2-4 foot swells. He did mention that an unusual amount of seaweed was present during the day but obviously we can’t control these environmental issues. It is something that does not affect fishing. In addition, my Captain expressed that people in your group suffered from seasickness after only 3 hours of fishing. According to him, your group demanded to immediately return to the Marina after getting sick and he followed instructions without any hesitation.

On my side, I took the time to corroborate this and searched historical weather data for Punta Cana during the day of your trip, May 31st; which you may find attached. Historical weather data on May 31st also reported 2-4 foot waves which favors my Captain’s testimony and contradicts your statement. I understand it wasn’t the best day at sea, but certainly it was adequate for fishing as other charters successfully did on the same day. In addition, I verified the Marina log reports for all departures and arrivals of fishing boats in CapCana and also contradicted your version. According to the official logs, the Barbie returned to the Marina 3 hours and 23 minutes to be exact after departure in the morning. In contrast, you mention that your group was bouncing like pinballs on 8-foot waves and then my Captain took you back to the Marina after 2 hours (not 3 hours). You also omitted the fact that most of your group got seasick although we recommended Dramamine to avoid seasickness. As for demanding the full fee, please remember that we are a business and we also have to pay bills and employees. We are certainly not responsible for an inexperienced group getting seasick and deciding to end the fishing charter earlier than planned. As any other profitable business, we have to charge the amount/price previously established on the booking process agreement. What I can say is that I do trust my Captain, a fisherman with over 20 years of experience. I know that if weather conditions would have been unfavorable, he would have asked you to cancel the trip immediately and provide a 100% refund on the trip. It has happened before without any problems or issues. Regarding seasickness, I always tell my clients to bring some Dramamine, especially for the inexperienced or amateur fishermen as in your case. Unfortunately, preventive measures were not taken and most of your people got seasick.

As I wrote before, I took my time to corroborate both versions of the story and based on the direct evidence I gathered, it seems to me that your review does not provide a complete description of all the events and circumstances surrounding the charter experience. Therefore, I believe your statements might lack some credibility given the evidence provided. In my opinion, your review is not fair for our operation and does not provide justice to all the positive reviews and pride we take in offering the best fishing charter experience in Punta Cana. I know you are upset and have all the freedom of speech in expressing your opinion regarding our charter operation, but it is fundamental and important to objectively write a negative review in order to improve our service. As we really want our customers to be satisfied (or your money back), we will be offering a 60% refund on your charter for the amount of time lost after ending the trip earlier. If interested, please email me with all your information in order to send you the refund. We will again welcome you any time as we genuinely want our customers to have great experiences and share memories with friends and family. Again, we deeply apologize for the whole misunderstanding and unfortunate events. We hope we can work things out. Don’t hesitate to contact me for any questions. Have a safe flight home and come back soon!

Sincerely,

Dr. Sobrino

We checked the Punta Cana fishing websights and read the high reviews regarding the Barbie. “They put you on the fish”, “Very successful”, “Great crew”.  So my wife and I booked a private charter and from that point through boarding the Barbie, the communication between Dr. Sobrino and my wife and I was excellent. He answered all communications/questions we had promptly.  Upon arriving in Cap Canna, we went to the boat the evening before the excursion and met the Capitan, Manuel and the First Mate, Ivan and discussed our plans for the following day. It is Marlin season in June and of course we were hoping…..

Twenty minutes out I hooked my first Marlin - a Blue!  It was quite the fight and it wore me down but Ivan and my wife kept me going.  It was too large to bring into the boat as they estimated him to be between 250 - 260 lbs. - Catch and Release!  While recovering we quickly had another strike which was a Mahi Mahi that we boated (and our resort prepared for our dinner). Within a half an hour I was on my second Marlin, this one a White. We got him to the transom but unfortunately he was caught in the prop so we boated him. It was very rough on the seas but our crew stayed hard at it, checking and clearing lines! baiting hooks as required and making our lunch. In the early afternoon the Capitan shouted “White Marlin” again and the fight was on. Ivan did a great job assisting me by adjusting the chair and getting my third Marlin into the boat unharmed. A Trophy White Marlin at 80” which we photographed and released. We had chartered the boat for the full day and while heading in, had a fourth Marlin strike, a White which snapped the line.  We went into the harbor flying our flags high!

I have big game fished around the Pacific, Atlantic, and Caribbean and have never been on a boat that had so much “Mojo” or provided a day like that!  We fished light tackle (30 lbs.) which was exactly what I was looking for as I did not bring my rods/reels. They also had deep water trolling equipment in use during the outing. Again, we can’t say enough about everyone associated with the Barbie!  I hope to get back next season or try to tackle some Yellowfin or Wahoo with them.

Was ok trip I was expecting more fish . Missed a couple . But cought 2 white marlin.  I’m surprised that we didn’t get any mahimahi or Wahoo .I’m not sure why. I think was a decent trip and and would do again. The boat was very clean and equipment was very good, well maintained .The crew was not bad I do think Ivan was just as disappointed as we were not to catch more fish. But that’s fishing. Was not lack of trying. Thank you !

First let me say that the Barbie’s owner Dr. Elias Sobrino was very nice and was easy to contact with any questions. The Barbie’s Capt. and mate were real fisherman and friendly host. The boat was in good shape , the fishing gear was top notch.
This was my second trip out with the Barbie with Capt. Manuel & mate Ivan.  My first marlin fishing trip 2 days prior I caught 2 out of 5 raises and 3 hookups. All hookups were White Marlin and raised 1 Blue . I probably would have caught 3 if the third hookup wasn’t a double hookup. Fishing alone you can only fight one at a time. I also caught several Mahi and Tuna to fill in between marlin strikes.  I could hardly wait 2 days until the second trip to try and chase down that Blue Marlin.
On this second trip action was slow in the morning. We skipped the Mahi spot and went straight for the Blue Marlin hideouts . But around 11:00 am the first strike came , and the last strike was at 3:30. We fished hard and fought seaweed but we managed to catch 2 White Marlin and 1 nice Blue Marlin. We lost 1 other White Marlin and raised 1 more.
Saving the best for last was the 3:30 pm hookup. Just as it was time to start back towards the marina a 200lb Blue Marlin hit and the fight was on. With lighter tackle it took me nearly 2 hours to finish catching it. The crew never complained once about working overtime to help me catch my trophy. My only regret was I was so busy catching him that I never got a picture before the mate cut him loose. Capt. said 3 meters and 200lb and the image burnt into my memory is all I have to go by. We did take pictures of the White Marlin. But a 50 to 75lb fish can be managed without hurting it or yourself. But grabbing a 10 or 11ft fish that weighs as much as you do (more so in the case of the mate ...150lb soaking wet ) is a different story.
So for 2 days total of Marlin fishing , 12 raises , hooked 7 and caught 5.  There was 4 White Marlin caught and 2 lost and raised 2 Blue Marlin and caught 1. Plus an assortment of table fare fish too.
This boat is can be for a family fishing trip for Mahi or Snapper , but it’s a great Marlin boat !

I researched boats before I came down to do some marlin fishing. The Barbie and crew was everything I hoped they would be. Good weather and calm seas brought us some good action. Raised 5 marlin , with 4 white and one blue. We hooked 3 and landed 2 . We probably would have landed 3 except it was double hookup and I was alone and already fighting a 7 plus foot white marlin.
We also caught several mahi & black fin tuna as well. Had such a good time that I’m booked back with them in 2 days.

We had to reschedule our trip due to inclimate weather. Elias worked with us, and was very professional about it. We had a great time!  The captain, and mate worked VERY hard during the entire day to get us on the fish, and keep the lines in!  I would definitely recommend them, and would go again if I ever get the chance!

It wasn’t no boat ride. The mate worked the lines ensuring baited, snag free trolling. When we hooked a fish the captain positioned the boat instantly. These guys were really on the ball. We had three white marlin on, landed one about 60 lbs. Also landed a 30 lb. Mahi Mahi as we were bringing the lines in at the end. Great trip.

Spent this morning on half day trip. Captain and Mate were amazing. Day started slow but if no fault of the crew. Last hour and half we landed 4 white marlin! Crew made sure we were good all day offering drinks and snacks. Checked baits over and over. Once fish started hiring teasers, they went into action and worked amazing as a team to get the bite. Had my 13 yr old son with me and they worked with him as he brought in his 2 marlins. Mate even brought him water as he was in chair fighting fish. Out of all the boats out in the area, only 1 other marlin was caught,  while we landed 4! I’ve been on many charter boats in US and Caribbean but have to say, the Barbie is now on the top of my list! I looked at many boats out of Punta Cana and based on reviews I saw, the Barbie was highest rated. I would recommend this boat to anyone who wants to catch fish. Just an amazing boat and crew!

My husband & I went on the Barbie on Monday March 20th, 2017. We booked the trip online in Minnesota prior to going to Punta Cana. It was easy to book and pay through paypal. The Owner got back to us via email right away with questions we had about the trip. It was a beautiful day at Sea.This fishing trip was excellent! Captain Manuel & Deckhand Ian were amazing! So friendly and helpful! We caught Mahi Mahi & Barracuda. The boat was fully equipped with everything we needed for sports fishing. It was very clean and the Deckhand Ian did an awesome job of keeping it clean throughout the whole trip. Ian cut up a fresh pineapple in the kitchen and made us sandwiches with a variety of chips. Beer, water & pop were also available to drink. The bathroom was very spacious and clean. Wish we would have booked a full day trip! Captain Manuel cleaned the Mahi Mahi for us so we could bring it back to the resort. Nothing better than fresh fish! Would definitely recommend the Barbie to anyone wanting to go deep sea fishing! We had an excellent time! We have been on many boats fishing in Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, The Bahamas and in Fort Lauderdale Florida. The Barbie was by far the best boat we have been on! Thank you so much for a wonderful time and beautiful memories! Ron & Shelli Seme

First time fishing in the DR with my sons (in their 20’s).  Both son’s got seasick (even on Dramamine)...  10-12 foot swells fortunately the Barbie is a large boat and powered through the seas.  Trolling along and then we hit all three lines at the same time ... the crew was on it and all three of us landed some large Mahi Mahi .... the largest being about 60 lbs.  We all will remember this trip! ....  A very professional crew… highly recommend them ...  a great time had by all.

It is always our priority to provide the best quality experience possible! By the way, you had an amazing catch! Is not that often that we see Blue Marlins on this particular season. Is up to the Captain to bring the Marlin on board if he thinks that is likely going to be bigger that 99 inches. We apologize for the whole misunderstanding! I read a lot of the reviews before booking this trip and I have one thing to say about the negative reviews: it is offshore fishing and the weather can get rough and the waves can make for a long day on the water. That is how offshore fishing works. If it was easy, everyone would do it. Don’t give a boat and crew a negative review for something that is out of their control.

Fortunately, we had a fairly calm day on the water with rolling waves accompanying us the entire trip, which is common for offshore fishing. we ended up catching 6 Mahi, but also hooked a blue marlin and raised a sailfish, although we didn’t land either which is quite common as these fish can be difficult to land.

The boat was incredibly clean. The crew was not the most talkative, but held more than enough proficiency in the English language to hold a conversation and certainly cater to our needs. A few quick witted jokes gave us occasional laughter. They are good at what they do too. They successfully landed four out of four mahi that all hooked up at once. For a crew to go 4-4 with beginners reeling in the fish is impressive. They kept everyone’s lines clear and did it with calm demeanor. I posted a pic of the four fish on.

The highlight of my trip was when we got the four fish in the boat, the mate asked if we would like to try some ceviche. He filleted one of the fish and made some of the best ceviche I have ever had and they served it on carved wooden platters with bread and freshly sliced apples.

The owner of the charter was attentive and gave quick responses to email questions. He provided us with transportation to and from the resort we were staying so it was quite the carefree experience.

Overall, this is an excellent adventure with a great crew and boat. I highly recommend it.

We ended up with enough filets to feed 17 people with a lot left over.

I would highly recommend the Captain and first mate for a great charter

The weather was terrible. It was raining and windy and I personally thought that the trip was going to be cancelled. The swells were so large that the boat was all over the place. One of the guys in my group was sick the entire time. The rest of us had to plaster ourselves against the wall and hold onto stuff in order to stand up because it was so rough. Needless to say, we caught zero fish.
I believe that the trip should have been cancelled or postponed but the focus was on making money rather than ensuring we had a good trip.
At the end of the trip, I asked the Captain how much I owed and he asked for the entire balance which I think was unfair, because it was a miserable time.

Dear Mr. Smith,

We deeply apologize for your negative experience. It is our top priority to provide the best quality experience for our customers and for this, we spend a lot of time working and training our employees. Also, having our boat and equipment adequately maintained and up to date is essential to our business. Positive reviews are the perfect evidence of how we manage our business and strive for the best quality service for our charter customers.

However, we must point out that weather is always unpredictable regardless of daily weather reports. It is based on probabilities. In addition, as part of FishingBooker policy, we always offer the option of cancelling or rescheduling in case of weather changes as has happened multiple times with other clients. We are also sorry that one in your group got sick; it usually happens to amateur fisherman and for this we recommend to bring Dramamine or Scopolamine patches in order to prevent or avoid seasickness in bad weather. I also spoke to our Captain that day and he told me that he gave your group the option of rescheduling for another day due to bad weather but some people in your group declined. I know sometimes the sea is rough unexpectedly, but we can’t certainly control our environment.

I do agree that we focus on making a profit as any business in the tourism industry does. We, as any business in the industry, need to pay bills, we need to provide maintenance for our boat and we also need to pay our employees. However, providing the best experience possible is ALWAYS our top priority. For this reason, we will be offering a 50% discount on your next fishing charter trip if you ever come back to Punta Cana and decide to charter with Barbie Fishing Team.

Again, we wanted to let you know that we deeply apologize for the whole misunderstanding and for this; we really want to work things out. We pride ourselves for being the best charter in Punta Cana providing great and memorable experiences. We hope you had a great time on your vacations in Punta Cana and hope you come back. We will receive you here with open arms any time and we promise a beautiful experience the next time! Happy Holidays and thank you for choosing Barbie Fishing Team.

Sincerely,

Dr. Sobrino

The fishing was fantastic 1 hour in and we had my targeted fish (sailfish) we completed our day with 1 tuna, 1 mackerel (god they grow big out here) 1 Sailfish and 7 mauhi mauhi.
A day never to be forgot I can’t wait to come back next year. If you are looking for a serious but also relaxed and fun trip this is the one for you.

We had an amazing time with Manuel and Christian aboard the Barbie.  We stayed at a nearby resort and the transportation was there at the designated time to pick us up.  I sport fish all over the world and have used many different charters from Costa Rica to Bermuda, and I must say that the Barbie was the most well-equipped fishing vessel I have ever chartered!  Heck, they had a Bose surround sound system in the main cabin!  I normally travel with my own gear because most charter’s equipment is so poorly maintained that I have found myself too often fighting the fish AND the gear.  But not the Barbie.  They had THE BEST gear for fighting BIG FISH.  All of their reels were 2 speed and the rods were custom made.

The weather was PERFECT! 90 degrees, 2’-4’ waves with a slight breeze, a little cloud cover, late September.  We had a 6 hour charter and were about 30 minutes into trolling when we got our first bite.  Seaweed beds were abundant and Manuel definitely put us on the fish.  We caught a total of 7 mahi-mahi, with 3 double hook ups!  We also caught 2 barracuda.  We went a little further out in search of that elusive marlin or sailfish.  We trolled for about an hour as our time was winding down with no bites or action, and then out of nowhere, this huge blue marlin attacks the squid teasers!  It then took the ballyhoo next to the teasers, but just as soon as it got on, it came off!  Ouch!  A great time was had by all.

I would HIGHLY recommend the Barbie to anyone vacationing in the DR who wants to do some serious fishing!

When I booked Barbie,I specifically said that I wanted to fish for Marlin, Blue MarlinThat I was taking my sons and grand sons on their first big fish fishing trip.my comment said MARLIN. When I boarded the boat, I checked the bait ,pre-rigged small bait fish, not Marlin rigged bait. I questioned the captain he said he had no live bait on board and that he used artificial, umbrella for Marlin. He short lined the umbrellas and trolled the rigged bait fish for smaller fish. Our Marlin fishing trip quickly turned into a Mai Mai trip!! We left the dock at 7AM and returned at 2PM. During that period, we were offered 1 bottle of water, and 2 small bags of chips between the 6 of us. we DID NOT have any of the advertised lunch ham sandwiches.captain said he didn’t make them. overall the boat ran well but is in general disrepair. ripped seat cushions, old cabin etc. Beautiful harbor but would not advise fishing on Barbie!!!

Thank you so much for your review, Mr. Bill Pope. We really appreciate it. It really makes our business become much better and improve our customer relationship. First, we apologize that your experience was not what you expected. Some days we have great catches and some days we don’t. However, I believe fishing is more than catching a Marlin or Mahi-Mahi. Is about having a great time and sharing the experience and memories of joy with friends and family. Also, it is about building patience and determination. We were aware that you specifically requested to fish for Blue Marlin. However, we don’t get to choose what we fish as other hunting sports. We target all species but many factors influence what we catch including: the season, weather, baits used, etc. At the time of your charter, it is high season for White and Blue marlin and low to moderate for mahi-mahis (which start to showing up during these days). But, again we don’t choose what you catch. That is one of the beautiful things that make fishing an incredible sport, the element of surprise and not knowing what you are getting until you fight against it. Every time we go out to open sea for fishing, we always target Blue Marlin, white marlin and mahi-mahi with fresh ballyhoo baits which we buy at the beginning of each week and store at freezers to avoid decomposing. It is important for you to know that having LIVE baits is extremely expensive and currently nobody offers this service in Punta Cana. Having LIVE baits requires artificial storage taking more time for preparation and a lot of maintenance. In our experience, it is not a cost-effective method of fishing for a business dealing with almost daily charter operations. It addition, judging from my vast experience, there is not much of a difference between both baits as many variables are taken in place, not just the baits as I said before. In the Barbie, we strive for quality fishing and we fish with dead ballyhoo baits which is what best resembles live bait. We continue to receive great results with our fresh ballyhoos. Of note, artificial vs ballyhoo fish (what we use) vs live baits is really a matter of personal choice and it is a controversial choice to make. You may refer to this website for more information regarding types of baits and the controversy around it: http://bid2fish.com.au/News/36/Marlin-Fishing-Tackle-Should-You-Use-Live-Bait-or-Plastic-Lures. As for the comment regarding our Barbie been in disrepair, remember this is a 1990 vessel with some wear and tear due to continuous daily use. This vessel has been remodeled two times, been the last on 2010. We keep our boat up to date, running well at all times and having not missed any annual maintenance in the past 6 years since been acquired. The boat was recently painted on the bottom and all cushions have been repaired in the past month for which I highly question your comment, as we invest a lot of money to keep our boat in optimal conditions. I invite you to tour any of the boat charters offered in Punta Cana and I swear by my sons that the Barbie is one of the highest qualities and best maintained boats in the area. I’m not bragging or lying, just read some of the 36 reviews written by satisfied clients on Fishing Booker which have mainly included positive reviews on their charter experience and generally have not agreed with your comments. I also forgot that we are the most reviewed charter which gives our clients more security in choosing a overall, well-reviewed charter. As for the miscommunication regarding the lunch, we deeply apologize. During your charter, we had a new first mate working for us and he was a little lost on his first day at the job with us. He wasn’t aware that he had to provide ham and cheese sandwiches for lunch to the clients. We found out later on the day. However, the situation is now fixed and the first mate is now aware although he learned the bad way. Regardless, I have heard great things about him and I have never received any negative feedback from clients regarding any other situations since he started working. In summary, it seems to me that you lack some experience on Caribbean offshore fishing practices, as this is something our team has been doing for the past 20 years. Our numbers do not lie based on our reviews. Again, we don’t get to choose our catch. We target Blue/White and mahi-mahis and if you have luck, you will get any of this great species. Which in your case, you DID because according to my crew; you had over 8+ Mahi-mahi’s which is a great number as compared to many competitors around. I already communicated with my employees and told them about all the comments you posted and everyone is aware of the comments. Again thank you for your review, as it helps us to improve and achieve a better service. We pride ourselves at providing the best quality service at Punta Cana since the day we started offering charters! Again, we deeply apologize for the negative experience.

Four of us went out for a day of fishing on the Barbie during our trip to the DR and had a fantastic time! Captain Manuel and his two deck hands were experts and functioned like a well oiled machine baiting hooks and tracking fish like blood hounds. Hooked three Marlins during our outing with no issues and sent them back into the ocean after snapping a couple of pictures. If you want to catch fish and have an outstanding time go with the Barbie!

The captain and the crew did everything possible to make sure everyone was having fun. The crew knows what they are doing kept checking the bait. The boat was clean and well maintained. Unfortunately several in the party got sick they tried to make them as comfortable as possible. We caught one white Marlin and had a great time.Excellent experience and will use them next time I’m in Punta Cana.

I would certainly recommend the Barbie and crew for fishing in Punta Cana. There was a delay in my trip due to boat repairs, but the owner went over and above to accommodate an alternate day for me to go fishing. The crew worked to get me on fish the entire 5 hr. trip. I appreciate the hard work and being able to deal directly with the boat owner, next time I’m in Punta Cana, I will certainly be in touch with the Barbie for my next trip.

It was a very rough day, 10 ft seas.  Although several within our group got sick and I chose to cut the trip short a few hours because of the kids getting sick, the crew never changed it checked the bait.  When the lines were pulled in ending our trip all the baits were either missing or very little was hanging in the hook…... Having fished a good part of my life, it was extremely sad and frustrating knowing the crew didn’t change the or check in the baits. Also, I had requested live bait and when we arrived I asked the captain about the live bait and he was quick to say “we don’t fish with live bait”.... The boat was nice and the location was beautiful….  The crew didn’t impress anyone and was lazy to say the least.

Both were very professional, friendly, and accommodating throughout the day. We got every bit of our 6 hours on the ocean! We booked a 1/2 day trip to fish on the Barbie in Punta Cana through Fishing Bookers.  We were on a one week vacation and Vicki had never caught a true big game fish.  The boat owner spoke to me before the trip and wanted to personally be sure our trip went well.  Fishing Bookers also were great in communicating with both Captain and owner before the trip so all things would go smoothly.  As it turned out things went much better than smoothly.  The Captain and mate were remarkable.  I have been on numerous sport fishing charters over the years, and this has to rank right up at the top in numerous catagories.  First, the boat was in excellent shape and the equipment was top of the line; Second, the Captain and Mate were a phenominal team; AND, they knew how to find fish!  Vicki first caught and released a 70lb. White Marlin.  The Captain and Mate worked together to to get on the fish by backing down and moving forward to stay on the fish.  They had pre-rigged ballyhoo where it was easy to get to and they changed baits frequently so only fresh bait was being presented to the fish.  Vicki’s second fish was truly spectacular!  She caught and released a 200+lb. Blue Marlin (the only one caught by ANY of the charter fleet that day)!  With the very aggressive Captain and crew wearing down the fish with backing down and moving forward shortened the fight and assured that beautiful fish would fight another day.
If you want a truly memorable vacation diversion, charter the Barbie!!  The Captain’s first words to me after an introduction were “This is your boat now, let’s go fishing”.  Do it, you won’t be disappointed!!

We booked a 6 hour charter and had to cut it short due to 3 out of 5 of us feeling pretty sick. That was the only negative for our group. In a couple hours the captain and our mates hooked us up with 3 White Marlins, we got all to the boat and released them. Had a couple Barracuda cut through the line. We all had fun in spite of the motion sickness.

Big Kudos to the mates for helping out the little one that was sick and trying to help him out. Couldn’t ask for a better crew.

PS, take your meds before heading out!!!!  There are some waves out there!

Let me explain our trip.  Transportation was 10 minutes early and very courteous.  Captain and crew when we arrived welcomed us aboard (Limited english, but the captain definitely enough as needed).  Shortly after leaving the harbor we realized we were in some very BIG waves for the day and had a great scary laugh about it for about 15 minutes!  A few things about that - the boat is great and plenty of size for the waves we were in (we were safe), however we brought some very young kids to fish that day and after 15 minutes they did not do so well (shame on me!) - do yourself a favor and check the wave report for the day you plan if sea sickness may be an issue.  That said we made our way out a few miles and endured for about an hour and a half until one of our group called the trip due to the sick kids.  When I relayed this to our captain you could tell that he was upset that we would have to call our trip early and offered as many suggestions as he could think of to keep fishing.  His belief is that in this type of water the fishing is best!!  Nonetheless we still decided to head in.  The captain took care of us and called return transportation to meet us early as well.  He let us know it would be 45 minutes until the ride could meet and suggested we fish our way in…and we did - oh boy we did.  After about another 10 minutes the chase was on, the crew started changing baits rapidly and a few boats began converging on a flock of birds feeding a distance away.  The captain navigated us with speed to the action and within minutes we were the first boat with action and had 3 fish on.  I was lucky enough to be in the back with a fish on.  The next 20 minutes we battled 2 good size Mahi Mahi and a very refreshing surf pounding up over the back of the boat and up into us making the experience a wild fishing adventure.  It was awesome!  The crew was amazingly attentive to assist in boating the fish and everyone enjoyed more that a few laughs.  It was incredible the extent that was given to make sure we caught fish even after making up our minds to cut the trip way too short!  On shore we were given ample time to take photos and ask questions.  If you are looking to catch fish - I highly recommend the Barbie!

She boat was stocked with water beer and food. Unfortunately one of our party was sick and the captain was very accommodating and brought him back to shore and arranged a taxi.  We went back out and landed a tuna and a sailfish.  Great experience, would recommend and go again if I ever go back to Punta Cana.

it was 4 guys in the DR for two days. Day 1, on the Sarabel (an old but still functional fishing boat) was great, literally a 10, as the Captain and mate were terrific, they both worked very hard, and the mate spoke pretty good english and was engaging with us. We caught 14 mahi and a 165 pound blue marlin after a long fight. The Captain maneuvered the boat with expertise following the marlin’s direction. Every fish we caught was landed on the boat. The mate made great ceviche for lunch (impressively he brought 8 limes, onions, and garlic) and he was changing bates and checking the lines non-stop. They really worked their asses off and we tipped them 30% and gave them plenty of fish. Day 2 on the Barbie was quite different. For starters we caught only two mahi in 4.5 hours (our choice to shorten the outing from 6 hours). The Captain didnt seem to hit or find any good spots, which sometimes can happen. The mate, however, was indifferent and seemed checked out. He spoke no english, exhibited little energy, and spent 75% of the time up top talking with the Captain. Not good, but especially annoying since the Captain was cruising through weed lines and the baits (which were frozen and looked old) were constantly picking up weeds and grasses. When we cruised back to the marina neither of them asked if we wanted the two mahi filleted. As we departed the vessel, we had to ask. The Barbie is a great vessel, much better than Sarabel, but we went to the DR for the fish not for a cruise.

Thank you so much for your review Evan. We really appreciate it. It really makes our business become much better and improve our customer relationship.

First, we apologize that your experience was not what you expected. As you said, sport fishing is unpredictable and luck is sometimes included in the equation. Some days we have great catches and some days we don’t. But I believe fishing is more than catching a Marlin or Mahi-Mahi. Is about having a great time and sharing the experience of joy with friends and family. Also, it is about building patience and determination.

In addition, we are sorry about our Captain and Mate’s language barrier. Remember that Spanish is the native language in Punta Cana. Although they try to do their best at communicating with clients, mates and captains have some grade of difficulty and the language can be stressful for them at times. We are doing our best at hiring multi-language speaking employees for the growing tourism in Punta Cana and we are also helping them to learn the language better.

As for the mate’s indifference, it seems odd to me as I have heard great things about him and I have never received any negative feedback from clients regarding his attitude. Maybe it was not his best day at sea. I also believe it is the mate’s duty to watch the sea for fish and it was mainly the reason that he was stationed at the tower with the Captain. But, as part of his official duties, it is his priority to assist the Captain in navigation while multitasking, been available for anyone and watching over every client, and equipment in order to assure everyone’s safety.

Regarding the baits, we always strive at providing fresh baits for our charters. However, due to the volume of charters during the week, we buy them at the beginning of the week and most of them are stored at the freezers to avoid decomposing. It is normal to be frozen, but I assure you, they are no more than a week old as part of our policy.

Finally, it is our policy that for each fish caught by a client, is theirs to keep, if they ask for it. They are proudly filleted by our Captain or Mate without hesitation. I already communicated with my employees and told them about the situation, as it helps us to improve and achieve a better service.

We pride ourselves at providing the best quality service at Punta Cana since the day we started offering charters! Again, we deeply apologize for the negative experience. We DO care about our client’s satisfaction, safety and always try to understand and adjust to their needs.  For this reason, we are offering you a 15% discount on your next charter with us while here at Punta Cana. Just let us know when you are returning.

Anyways, thank you so much for your time and your excellent feedback. It was a pleasure to have you and your party at the Barbie! You were an excellent and communicative client from the beginning.  We look forward to having you back anytime! Besides what happened, I hope you had a great time and enjoyed the fresh Mahi-Mahi! Come back soon! Take care!

Sincerely,

Elias J. Sobrino Najul, MD, MS
