Background
Captain John Rivers has over 46 years of experience. After the Marines, John decided to start his own charter company and has now been successfully guiding for 17 years. His first passion was Bass fishing, which later transformed into love for saltwater species: for John, there is nothing like hooking into a monster Snook and pulling him out of the Mangroves or chasing Redfish on the flats. His first ever saltwater fish was 30lb bull Redfish, which got him hooked for life. The Captain enjoys sharing his knowledge with his friends and clients, putting them on fish.
Techniques
I fish with live bait and artificials.

Spring has arrived on Tampa Bay
Spring has arrived on Tampa Bay
Mar 7, 2022 Tampa
It’s officially Spring in Tampa Bay Area. Snook are all over the place and are feeding well. sweater temp’s are right where they should be which puts the fishies I. A good mood, which means bent rods and screaming drags. Live bait is the best choice, but if you like tossing artificial’s, no worries, you’ll catch your fair share as well. Here are a few lures that I like when targeting snook, redfish and trout. Headon’s Spookis my go to for top-water. For redfish, and trout, I like tossing a 4”paddle tail ( colors: white and clear with red metal-flake ). Snook in Tampa Bay are live bait feeders, but you can still get them to eat artificial’s. I like a 1/8oz snake-lock jig head with a ZMan Paddlerz. Schools of redfish are also showing up on the flats in a few areas. These fish are very boat shy, so be quiet and patient and you'll hook a few. Once again, live or cut bait has been the best way to hook these skittish bronze beauties. Some of the redfish schools have been beat up pretty bad by locals and guides, so again, be patient and you'll hook a few. They are mostly oversized fish, which means your drag is gonna scream. The sheepshead bite is still going strong in Tampa Bay, and the rock piles, jetties and bridges have been producing some nice catches. Live shrimp, fiddler and mud crabs have been the baits of choice. If you're going to be in the Tampa Bay, St. Petersburg or Clearwater area, give me a ring; I trailer my boat to the best fishing spots so we don't have a long boat ride to the fish. With 15 years of guiding under my belt, you'll be in good hands if you jump aboard my New 2360 Ranger and go on a fishing adventure with me. Sincerely John
March Snook Madness in Tampa Bay
March Snook Madness in Tampa Bay
Mar 7, 2019 Tampa
March Madness usually means Basketball, but here in Tampa Bay it means the snook bite is on. This week we’re hopefully having our last cold front, and it’s going to drop down into the lower 40’s, but that’s ok, because it’s going to keep the water temps right where they need to be to keep the bite going strong like it has been over the past two weeks. The Snook bite has been so good that I’ve had 50 + Snook days and that’s no fish tale. The bite’s been crazy good for snook, and the redfish have been chewing as well. On my last few trips, we’ve boated some nice redfish, with the biggest right around 36 inches. Let’s switch gears a minute and talk about Sheepshead some; this year I thought the sheepshead bite was going to be exceptional, but with the warmer temps in February, it’s not been as good as it usually is in February, but this cold front might be just what we need to fire off the sheepies to spawn and let us catch a few for dinner. So, what can you expect if you’re heading to Tampa Bay/Tarpon Springs to fish with me? Expect lots of bent rods, lots of snook, plenty of reds, and a sufficient amount of trout. If you’re heading to Tampa, Clearwater, St. Petersburg, or Tarpon Springs and would like to experience a professional inshore fishing trip, you’ve come to the right place. With over 21 years fishing the gulf coast and 17 years guiding professionally, I can assure you that you’re in good hands. Thanks for stopping by, and I look forward to setting up your Tampa Bay Backcountry Fishing Trip. Sincerely, Capt. John Rivers

Tampa Bay Fishing Report Rivers to Bay Fishing Charters - R2B Fishing with Capt. John Let’s first talk about the Red Tide that’s hit the gulf coast, I can to say that it has not hit Tampa Bay, St. Pete or Clearwater as of 8/26. I’ve been out a lot the past two weeks and fishing has been excellent. I do feel bad for my fellow captains down south of me that have had to deal with the effects of Red Tide and the fish kills that they have endured. So, what are we catching in Tampa Bay right now? Lots of Mangrove Snapper and some of them are very good sized. I’ve been able to get two and three-man limits of Mangroves on most trips. Next is Speckled Trout; the bite for trout has been very good on both incoming and outgoing tides. I’m using both live and artificials on the trout. Next up is Snook, and again it’s been excellent for snook in the 18”-22” range, with a few fish over 26 inches. Lastly let’s talk about redfish; the Red fishing in Tampa Bay has been hit and miss for me, where one day I’m on them and the next I’m not. I always say that there are no fences out there, and sometimes the fish move on. I will say that the next three months is when the red fishing in Tampa Bay gets awesome. Starting now going into Labor Day and really getting good in late September and all of October. As the water cools in October the inshore bite is going to be off the chain, so if you’re looking for some rod bending action with nonstop drag pulling, give me a ring in October and let’s get you hooked up. You really R2B Fishing with Capt. John! Hope to see you on the water. Tight Lines. Capt. John
