I want to preface this review by saying that the only reason that I am writing this is because Destin is home to some of the best saltwater fishing in the United States, and I donโt want any other families to make the mistake of fishing with Captain Jake when you are down here on vacation.
My group of 6 were booked for a 5 hour off shore trip (7:00-12:00), he delayed the trip twice the morning of to 8:00. When we arrived the only thing he said was that we would do an inshore trip instead of an off shore trip do to the water conditions. He might have said 3 words to us the whole trip. He didnโt even ask us the basic questions: where were we from, if we had been deep sea fishing before, or even our names. We left from the legendary marina to another marina where he filled up the boat and tried to get bait twice, this took up a little over an hour ( considering the price of the trip that is a lot of time). Once it was decided off shore was no longer an option we made our way back to around where we left from to start inshore fishing ( there was not talk about maybe adjusting the trips price because the scope of the trip was changed).
ย It was around 9:20 when we began fishing, after around 25 minutes with 0 fish caught we drove another 15 minutes to another spot. This pattern repeated it self for the remainder of the trip. Meanwhile the only time he would open his mouth would be to smoke, or to cuss out other boaters on the water.
Around 4 hours into the trip I caught my first fish, it was my first and last fish of the day. My excitement was quickly extinguished by captain Jake getting the hook stuck in his hand. After he took the hook out of his hand he immediately drove back to the marina to end our trip early. He cleaned our two sad Bluefish, and despite our better judgment we still tipped him. If I could do it all over again I would have rather rented a pontoon and fished/guided ourselves than spend the day with the inexperienced captain Jake.
