Barra Bonaza

The fishing has been a Barra bonanza over the last few days with the big run in tides on the morning charter. Bait has been plentiful to gather with the cast net with the barras preference being live mullet. There has been a couple of 'horse sized ones that we have landed a also a few that have got away. you have to be patient when hoping to land one of these trophy fish and let them inhale the live mullet all the way before setting the hook. The black moon was yesterday so the tides will start to decrease over the next week and that will give us the opportunity to fish the deeper holes around the estuary that hold some monsters. Russell is such a lovely, amenable host, working hard to show us a good variety of fish available in the Estuary. We took two half day tours and enjoyed them both. One day was faster than the other but that’s fishing! Very pleasant way to enjoy the tropical weather in Cairns.

Thanks Leigh It was great to have you out on a charter for 2 mornings the first morning was hot and slightly windy but good fishing, the next morning the weather turned for the best fishing a bit slow. My two boys and I had a great afternoon, despite the rain. Our skipper (great bloke, and extremely knowledgeable) worked hard to get us over some fish. My littlest guy was very proud to tuck into his self-caught fingermark for his dinner tonight. The boat is a solid, stable (and quick) plate boat with twin 70’s, and the rods and reels (near new) are good quality with braided line. No shortage of live bait.
