Background
My first memory in life is going fishing with my father when I was 4 years old. I have been hooked, my wife would say obsessed, with fishing ever since. Come fishing with me and enjoy battling trophy size Salmon or Halibut, as well as taking home plenty of eating size fish
Techniques
For Halibut, we anchor in water 250 to 400 feet deep and lay down a scent trail for the fish to home in on. The action usually starts within an hour of putting our bait on the bottom. For Salmon, we troll slowly in various areas waiting for the fish to hit

Quality gear and good instruction allowed us to boat every fish we had on - just a slowish day of fishing.  Robert worked well with my two boys and it worked out that everyone was able to claim a fish by the end of the day.

Two of the best behaved boys I’ve ever had on a trip

Went fishing on Tuesday, June 6, 2017

Our trip began promptly at the agreed upon time: 6:00 am on a bright, warm sunny day. Robert quickly explained safety protocols and fishing proceedures ln a clear and friendly manner. He was extremely knowledgeable about fishing techniques as well as lnformative about local coastal history. As the day progressed, it was apparent that very few fishermen were catching fish. Regardless, Robert extended our half day trip to ensure a catch. He has a great sense of humour and we enjoyed the lively banter. All-in-all, it was a great day on the Water! We would not hesitate to do it again

Unfortunately no great stories to tell, to start off via email we communicated with the captain that we wanted to go salmon and halibut fishing, the captain said this is totally possible and we could also drop a crab/prawn trap on the way out and pick it up on the way in…  wake up at 330am… get to sooke for 6 to leave the dock… get on board and say to myself “no salmon gear, no crab trap… great… “... then we pull up to the “spot” to halibut fish… drop lines… drop anchor… and sit… over an hr before the first bite when the rod starts going the captain says ” oh its just a dog fish” then proceeds to reel in the fish and kill it and drop the line again… after a bit more he gets more dog fish but then proceeds to leave them on the line for a long time before reeling them in… after watching the captain reel in 2 more dog fish himself i mention maybe one of us should be reeling them in even if they are just dog fish… we are here to fish after all ... after watching the captain tie his lines for his Tuesday charter for a few hours… we finally got one on… ended up being a skate… kind of neat but still no halibut… you would think we would pull up anchor and move ... even if its 500 yards down the bank… sitting in one spot watching the captain talk and tie lines for 9 hours is not my idea of a way to spend $1000… Very poor experience and not happy with the outcome… would hope this is not a regular occurrence for this charter as we felt completely ripped off and left very un satisfied… when the trip ended the captain offered us our next trip “half price”...I understand its called fishing and not catching but the lack of effort from the captain was the biggest complaint… never once did we try somewhere else… we will not be booking a charter with this company again…

And the reply from the Captain

As the captain mentioned in this poor review I feel compelled to rebut a few things. First, the client fails to mention that there was a gale warning that day and the next and we could not go to the best area for halibut due to 25 knot winds and 6-8 ft seas expected.I gave them a chance to reschedule as there were concerns expressed about poor sea conditions prior the the day of the charter
At no time did I offer salmon fishing or dropping crab traps.
It’s unfortunate that a day with poor catch results comes back with such an unfair review.
Since there seems to be resentful feelings involved here the half price trip is off the table because there would be negative attitudes enough to spoil a good day on the water

And my reply

We will be sending the email communication that includes a discussion about salmon and dropping traps to fishbooker as well ... sorry but we do not agree as the main issue is that we were anchored in one spot for the 8+ hour trip and no effort made to move spots at all even after a couple hours of the trip and no luck that is ok that the deal is off the table as we would not like to book with this charter company ever again :)
