Pre booked Solmar VI weeks before trip . Sent email to Skipper , by way of website ‘Fishing booker ” , but no response . Tried again , no response , After landing in Cabo , went looking for Boat / Skipper at 6am the Morning before , found Boat supervisor, and all was OK for the next morning (thankful I had a Printout from ‘Fishing Booker ’ ...... OK , here comes the curve ball, Next morning at 6:20 am , at the dock , they need to switch boats ??? Have to walk back to Hotel area ( one of our party was just getting over a Broken ankle ) and this turned out to take 12 min’s ! They had Bait , Fluids’, some lunch, but although Mechanically the boat was OK , there was no proper seating ( just two worn , tired trolling seats) , no proper hand rails , extra seating , cup holders , no place to hand our day bags! Unfortunately our hired requested mate , turned out to be another skipper , who didn’t feel up to any instructions on the technics of their fishing ,or their Reels , His answer to a question about the Brake lever on the over size trolling Reels was ‘Don’t touch anything “. Not very Helpful when you’ve got a fish on . He processed to climb up and be with the Skipper for 3 hours , and as a char4ter , we were un happy and getting ready to Munity ! Be lucky that another boat Radioed of tuna , and witch we proceeded to join up with . We got fish, but wasn’t a very enjoyable experience for the Money!

When I booked the trip, it did say I’d have to buy bait as well. That was an extra $26.00 on top of the agreed on price. They took us by the arch, which was great. Victor and Carlos worked hard to try to catch fish. They tried to make sure we were enjoying our trip. Unfortunately we didn’t get a bite. We stayed an extra hour, but still no success. I understand fishing, you can’t make the fish bite. We saw a ton of whales jumping and they moved in close for good photos and videos and we were very thankful. Unfortunately on the way back to the marina a oil line broke and sprained down the engine with oil and it ignited. Victor and Carlos got the fire out out quickly, but then we were stuck in a boat that wasn’t running. They moved us down below and it was pretty rough down there, being dead in the water. My wife then became very seasick, because we were rocking back and forth pretty hard. Finally a boat came and towed us the remaining 3 to 4 miles back in. This was one of those days that nothing went right… I’m not posting this to bitch, I’m just giving a play by play of the day. I’ve been deep sea fishing multiple times now and this was the first boat that didn’t have a fish finder on it, so I thought that was odd.

The captain and crew were excellent - UNTIL - we had a very respectable marlin on the line.  I had said repeatedly that I did not want to kill any fish.  I only wanted pictures and all fished were to be released.  Once we had the marlin on the line and we realized that it was of trophy size - 96 1/2” we measured later - the men began to pressure me to keep the fish to have mounted.  I kept saying pictures only - my wife has my voice on video saying just that.  The guys kept pushing me to keep the fish to mount.  I finally gave in when it appeared that the only way to boat the fish for pictures was to gaff it.  When we returned to the dock their boss boarded the boat, measured the fish and showed me a chart showing that it would cost $1604.00 US to mount it.  According to the chart it appeared that he and his crew would receive $880 up front to skin it and deliver it to the taxidermist who would then charge $724 to actually mount it.  Crating and shipping were extra.  You can “mount” a fish from a picture and dimensions taken.  I’ve had it done.  I believe that the crew was hoping for a big payday from the “gringo” and therefore pressured me into killing the fish.  We parted ways with the crew and boss mad at me and me feeling bad because the fish would still be alive were it up to me.  I still tipped the crew but they were still mad. ALSO - when I booked the trip on this site I booked for “nearshore fishing” for roosterfish and jack crevalle.  These guys took it upon themselves to go marlin fishing.  As it turned out I can hardly complain about a successful day of marlin fishing but somehow the wishes of the fisherman - in this case me - need to be honored.

Additional comment: My wife videoed a large portion of the “fish-on” battle.  My voice can be heard many, many times responding to Victor’s appeals to keep the fish and have it mounted saying “I only want pictures”.  My wife even asked if I was sure and I responded “yes, just pictures”.  The crew led me to believe that they would not be able to boat the fish without gaffing it.  Only when it appeared that they would not be able to boat the fish for pictures did I finally give in and told them to “gaff it”.  The upside is that we did have the fish processed, sealed and frozen at the “Old Man Vacuum Packed” place and after securing cash from Scotiabank - they would not take a credit card - we were able to bring the fish home where it is now in our freezer.  It is excellent eating!

Hi mr bullock, i just Check with my crew , this What i found , captain explain me they kill the fish under your request because you wanted to mount and it was the only way to kill a billfish in our boat dragón due we have a catch and release program , once you kill and returned to the marina you decline that requested service and they show me you took whole fish and did not finish the payment for the vaccum pack service ( see the receipt on the picture )

Well, fishing was spotty, probably due to a full moon.  The captain and mate did a great job and when we ran out of time, gave us an extra 1.5hrs to try to beat the skunk.  About half or more of the boats out that day came up empty.  The guys were great and the reception by the coordinator at the doc was very good. At sea it was a rough one, but then, that is open-ocean big-water big-game hunting.  Pulling lines at the very end we had a fish hit, the drag sang, but it short-struck the skirt (probably) and there was no hook-up.  Compared to some of the US operations, the boats may seem a little tired and spartan, but then, this is Mexico.  They knew what they were doing and I’d recommend these guys in a minute.  On the way back into the harbor, my girl friend got some great photos of a magnificent frigate bird taking a thrown bait fish, as well as “Pedro” and another of the the harbor sea lions and brown pelican getting fish on the transom.  At sea we saw a pod of dolphins, a sea lion and a humongous whale in the distance (not the usual California Grey Whale). —So, that was all very cool.  Even though I’ve wanted to Marlin fish in Cabo since I was nine years old (I just turned 59) and did not catch a fish, it was truly one of those great lifetime experiences.  I thank everyone from the bottom to the top of my heart and wish them all safe and prosperous adventures. —=Dan.  (Ames, Iowa, USA)

Boat had mechanical issues before we ever left the marina and hindered us from getting out of the marina to start fishing. We also needed fuel before we left the marina and this took away 30 minutes of our fishing time. We did not catch a fish! Went out the next day with another company and caught 14 fish! The other company was also less expensive!

The morning started off ok but once we got in around 10 miles the water got real choppy. The crew didn’t even communicate with as far as the game plan to what were gonna try to catch. They just strung out some artificial bait and trolled for a couple hours without talking to us and just left us below. I ended up getting sea sick because I closed my eyes from boredom. The crew didn’t even try to change tactics or get closer to shore where the seas were way more calm to catch different fish. There was no effort to try to get us hooked on anything. Awful experience these people just get your money and can care less of your personal experience.

On the internet it stated fishing license included, however we had to buy them at the dock.  They tried to charge more than what they were.  Beer, water and live bait was included.  When we went to pick up the live bait, captain asked if I wanted to pay $50 for the live bait.  I had to tell him it was included, he said ok.  They would have gotten a bigger tip if I wouldn’t have felt like they were trying to scam me.  Otherwise had a good time on the water and caught a couple of impressive fish.

This trip got off to a bad start when I used the head.  The toilet had no seat and the bathroom door did not lock.  This was extra unfortunate because my 20-year-old daughter was with us.  This was simply disrespectful and unacceptable.

The captain barely spoke english and was aloof.  The first mate spoke some English, and was reasonably friendly.

We had hoped to catch some big fish, but the water was too cold for them (this was nobody’s fault).  We ended up catching 2 small Spanish mackarel, one Jack, and six trigger fish.  This was not what I expected from the best fishing area in the world, but we at least caught our dinner. The three mackrel I hooked all bit through the leaders.  This made me think the leaders were sub standard.

On a positive note, we saw 3 whales, leaping sting rays, a sea lion that came right up to the back of the boat begging for our unused bait.

I fished December 20, 2016.  Before we left the dock that morning, I was asked what I wanted to fish for and I told them anything.  I just wanted to catch something.  I understand you don’t always catch tropy fish, but I have fished Cabo, Cancun, Dominican Republic, Panama, the coast of Florida, and the Gulf of Mexico, and have never gone out with a guide and not caught anything.  That is exactly what happened with Solmar VI.  Needless to say, it was very disappointing to come back to the marina and the boats that are already docked, including boats from their own fleet, have their flags flying with the fish they caught.

Loved the trip!  Dockmaster Ignacio had all the information and was totally helpful.  Left the dock early, captain knew the waters, first mate knew the gear.  Neither spoke much english, but knew the language of the hook up!!

2 large Dorado’s at first light, then a nice large Marlin to fight and laugh at my inability to reel in a brick.

I’ll be back, for more good times!!!

I told the captain that we wanted to catch some grouper to eat.  He did not do that.  All we did for 3 hours was troll for big game fish,  there were none.
Very disappointed and won’t fish again in Cabo.  I have deep sea fished for 50 years and thought the boat was going too fast and did not think the lures used were appropriate.
Total cost was over $900 US.

I had a wonderful time.  I was nervous about the trip because this was my first time fishing.  The crew was great and very helpful.  The Captain Jesus Cota was also great.  He went out of his way to help us find our way around.  Looking forward to coming back again.  Thank you.

My son and I secured the Solmar VI for a half a day trip.  The crew Diego the captain and Bernardo the first mate were at the boat on time ready to go.  We fished our half day and had a successful trip with 2 Marlin hook ups.  Would definitely recommend this team when looking for options to fish out of Cabo.
