Went fishing on Friday, October 7, 2016

Capt. Randy was ready and raring to go when we arrived at the marina. We just had to step on the boat and we were off.
He got us on the fish quickly. Four tarpon landed and another four hooked. The guy knows what he is doing, but is humble enough to acknowledge that no guide has all the answers on where the fish may be and how they may behave on any given day.
Seeing my 71-year-old dad catch his first tarpon after a lifetime on the water was priceless. Magic Tarpon and Capt. Randy made that happen and for that I am grateful.
The captain seemed genuinely stoked for us. He is very professional but was more than happy to share his insight into the fishery and the fish. That conversation eventually moved into surfing, the island economy and bucket-list trips across the globe. Good stuff.
My dad, a longtime fisherman, remarked on the good quality of the rods and reels and the good condition of the boat. Something I wouldn’t have noticed.
We made a few drifts in spots that looked promising. The captain impressed us with his willingness to move on in search of the fish. When he apparently found a honey hole we were pleased with his patience as we worked a very fruitful stretch of water. Eight hooked and four landed. Couldn’t be happier.
My dad and I I talked about doing this for nearly 20 years. My suggestion is don’t wait that long. And don’t hesitate about picking Magic Tarpon. Good odds with them. We will go again and hope that Capt. Randy is on the job.

Went fishing on Monday, April 18, 2016

A good day out, but we felt the skipper might have spent a little longer at the start catching baitfish.  We spent the last hour with virtually no bait, making what we had go further by cutting up the bait smaller and fishing one rod fewer.  Also, we wondered whether he ought to have done more to help an inexperienced angler keep his fish away from trouble by a combination of moving the boat into more open water and providing clear and forceful advice on playing the fish.  The fish was eventually lost when it snagged a mooring pole which we could have kept much further away from.  I would use MagicTarpon again because it was reasonable value for money.  And apart from the comments above, the skipper was pleasant and happy to share his knowledge and advice.
