What would you recommend to anglers fishing in Duluth, Minnesota for the first time?

Hi. I had a great experince with Legacy Angling charter fishing on Lake Superior out of the Dutluth Minnespta Harbor on July 6, 2025. Captain Joe and the first mate Wally were both very professional and upstanding young men. They knew what they were doing. They were fun to talk to. We caught coho salmon and lake trout. I would highly recommend Legacy Angling for charter fishing on Lake Superior in the Duluth Minnesota area. Captain Joe set me up with his father Bret from Cloquet Minnesota as a guide to fish a local lake on July 5, 2025. We had a an excellent afternoon of fishing. We caught about 30 walleye plus a number of bluegills, some perch, and largemouth bass. I would also highly recomend Bret as a guide for fishing on the other Duluth area rivers and lakes besides Superior for walleye and other typical Minnesota lakes fish.

Above anything else, bring something warm to wear as being up north on top of the breeze off the lake always keeps it cool. Outisde of that I’d reccomend a cooler big enough for things like big salmon

Take advantage of, and fo with an experienced captain, Captain Brody with Looper Charters. This was our first time and it was a blast. It is worth the investment and you get to go and fish, nothing to organize, worry about, and no experience needed. Just go and have fun!

July is kind of the dog days of fishing (reportedly better in beginning of June and mid August through September) but we caught our limit! Early morning departure is the way to go. Less boat traffic and less tourist traffic. It was easy to get to the marina. The trip was much less stressful than I expected. I was nervous about going out on Lake Superior, but I felt safe and secure before we even got completely out of the harbor.

Not every day is a ‘high fish day’. Don’t blame anyone if you’re not catching fish. Going fishing and catching fish are two different things. Be prepared that fishing can be slow, but still make it an enjoyable trip. Relax, enjoy the scenery and the fact that you’re on the water, and have good conversation. Laugh a lot. Then, if you’re catching fish, and it’s a good ‘catching’ day, that’s a terrific bonus. Be prepared for weather changes.

It's Lake Superior and Northern Minnesota. Those 2 in combination can create interesting weather at any time. Bring enough clothes to add or subtract as the temps and the wind require. Take some Dramamine with as well if you have a sensitive tummy to waves or if you've not been in big water before. Better safe than sorry

Hiring a charter is the way to go if you are fishing for the first time. They have everything you need and they help you understand what they are doing and why. Even if you book a time in a slower part of the season, they have the knowledge to get you to the places that have the best likelihood of catching fish!

Apparently due to the water temps this time of year, the fish can be very spread out and hard to find. Earlier in the Summer will catch more fish and later in the Summer will give chances at bigger fish, according to our guide.

Yes. This is our third charter trip on the Great Lakes and the best crew (Captain Jamie and Graham) by miles. I would 100% recommend this boat and crew to anyone looking for an engaged and professional fishing charter. Hands down a Terrific Crew, Boat, and experience!

It was recommended to go as early in the morning as possible for best fishing, but we did catch two at 9am and 1030am! Just being on the boat and out on the lake and taking in the sights was enjoyable when the fish weren't biting!

July can be tricky with the heat but the crew definitely went above and beyond to keep us where the fish were at!

As a Duluthian taking a charter on this Great Lake I see everyday, I was still in awe. The fish were a bonus.

dress for varied weather, as it changes throughout the day. be prepared for rain but dont let it scare you away. have fun!

Captain Brody and deck hand Canyon provided excellent advice for my grandkids who hadn’t fished from a boat. Looper Charter is an excellent choice for first time anglers.

It going to be weather dependent, we caught a warm calm day on the lake. The fish were biting, fun was had.

We hit the season a little early as the water was just starting to warm up, but still caught lots of tasty fish. I think June through August would be best.

I would liked to catch some other species of fish, but it was still a great day.

Depending on what fish you’re interested in, you may want to go earlier in season.

Our fishing trip was great. Nice weather, very small waves. All 4 Grandpas got a fish.

Be prepared for chill weather on the lake. Be aware that September is not the busiest time for fish in the Duluth area.

Even though the captain didnt want us to get our hopes up for a fish-filled afternoon, we had plenty of action and caught our limit. Good times.

I would recommend taking a charter with chasing tail. He has a great captain and he knows what he’s talking about and he knows how to catch fish.

Fish with Joe @catching Tails charters! Several boats went out as same time but joe knew where fish were so my family caught a lot other boats came in early with no fish.

Captain and mate did a marvelous job of keeping us on fish. They made it easy to catch our limit of Cho and lake trout.

Leave a little bit before you normally would I forgot that it can take a little while to get over the lift bridge to the marina

Bring a winter hat in the morning trip, dress in layers, bring drinks with twist caps. ( Not many cup holders) buy a shirt and or baseball hat from him. ?

Middle of the day can be tougher than the mornings, but fish eat all day and these guides know what drives them to you. Lots of knowledge and experience and it shows.
