Fresh Buenos Aires Fishing Reports

We kicked off the golden dorado season in Buenos Aires, and I want to share how our latest outing went! It was in November 2023, and we started the day in an unusual way for Rio de la Plata fishermen: stepping off the boat to walk through dense vegetation. Our initial goal was the tarariras, a strong and elusive fish. In this estuary, where the river changes direction, and the water level varies a meter four times a day, the conditions are quite a challenge. High waters indicate the presence of dorados or palometones, but they often hide in inaccessible places. With the right scent and flavor, we can attract the tarariras, but it's a bit more complicated with fly fishing. In these conditions, we need the estuary to be low, and the vegetation dry so that the tarariras gather in the trenches. We started fishing with light gear, but the surprise came when we found tarariras and doradillos at the same time. We could detect the doradillos by their attacks and wakes while patrolling. In such small areas, we only catch two or three before moving to another fishing spot. As the bank dried up, the tarariras became more active, especially the larger ones from 2 to 3 kg. It was intense, with the tarariras smashing the surface with jumps and tail slaps. After lunch, we waded up to our necks and went to fish for dorados on the rocks of the Uruguayan coast. We tried a new anchoring technique to comb the stones surgically, varying speeds and angles in the presentation of the streamers. We switched from floating lines to sinking lines to cover different levels of the water column. The dorados increased in size, with several specimens averaging 2 kg, some approaching 4 kg, and a giant of 5 kg that broke free in the first jump. As we are used to, this Argentine classic awaits us with excellent silverside fishing, with more than satisfactory quantity and quality. We left very early and after crossing the Miter Canal a few thousand meters, we set off to dribble with very good results. We got a large number of silversides of good quality, some even weighed up to a kilo. For this occasion we used 19/1 floating lines of the "bellied" type with brads that did not exceed 25 cm in depth. In a year full of difficulties, the Río de la Plata continues to give us reasons to enjoy this beautiful pastime. Take advantage, we are on the eve of what will undoubtedly be an excellent season.

We fish with floating line. For bait, we use a small catfish. Golden dorado season is running up to april. Some times they stay here up to june.

One of the most difficult species of catfish to catch in the Rio de la Plata. It's called Surubi. In this case it is small, it can reach 100kg. We caught it at the mouth of a stream. We use a large eel as bait. Hook 8/0.

For two months now, a new season of exciting golden dorado and giant catfish fishing has begun !! We are drifting with live bait. Both in bottom fishing and floating fishing modalities. The preferred baits are: eels and small fish called "sabalitos". The biggest fish, right now, are swimming in deep water.

We continue fishing great Catfish and very good golden gilthead in the Rio de la Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina. There are days that are best fished in depth and others that golden browns take bait very well in the afloat lines. We are sailing around an hour. We use eels and some small fish called cascarudos as bait. Usually, we have big hooks in our lines (8/0 or 9/0). Fishing is done by letting the wind and the current push the boat into areas of large banks, crossed by gutters where the smaller fish that serve as food for the larger ones swim.
