For small boat anglers launching from the South Shore you may have to go no farther than Stone Ledge. Don’t be surprised if you encounter a few blackfish to go along with those brown bombers out there. However with seas expected to be very friendly this Sunday, you may find a window to set sail for the eastern edge of Stellwagen with 150’ of water the sweet spot for haddock and cod. The place is also swarming with sea herring and they are in turn attracting tuna of all sizes. In fact, Mark felt strongly that a few staggered baits under anchor will not last long before Charlie comes calling. For school to medium tuna, Peaked Hill Bar has been the place to be.

Captain Mark Rowell of Legit Fish Charters said that the edges of Stellwagen Bank are holding the most big bluefin while the top portion is home to footballs to medium sized fish. What’s interesting is the volume of market sized cod in 150 feet of water just east of the bank in addition to keeper haddock. Those cod can enjoy their sanctuary for the next week and a half but beginning September 15th and ending September 30th, the GOM cod season for recreational anglers will open up with a one fish/person/day limit. However, Captain Mark Rowell of Legit Fish Charters did find mahi mahi by The Dump, which is Southwest of Martha’s Vineyard and is one of the most prolific “inshore” areas which have a high probability of producing pelagics. Mark knew he was onto something when he found an eddy of 80-degree water which doubtless had spun off the Gulf Stream and was swarming with mahi mahi. The fish fell for Deadly Dicks, swimming plugs and bait. Closer to port, the Legit Fish Crew happened on a mile-long blitz just east of The Canal which was the handiwork of mackerel feeding on smaller bait which looked like sardines.

Unfortunately a dragger from Cape Ann hit the place like a bomb and traumatized both fish and fishermen. Once the mud settles it is hoped that the good fishing picks right up where it left off. Clouds of sand eels and fields of mackerel are what’s drawing in the gamesters there. Mackerel-colored X-Raps have been doing a job on those fish. Next up on the agenda for the Legit Fish crew is an inshore mahi-mahi quest. For the biggest bass around the skipper suggests a live mackerel fished near Stone Ledge. "On The Water"

The bass are in close, at the mouth of the North River or outside of Scituate Harbor and they are massacring menhaden. In the middle of everyone going bonkers for bass, the haddock on the bank are getting lonely. Lately the Legit crew has been finding the groundfishing great with the haddock on surprisingly shallow water in the Stellwagen area. Clams are the go-to bait with many fish pushing 19 to 20-inches. He and his crew are the first I know of to encounter significant bluefish in Massbay this year as he’s been catching them at The Race. Some of the blues have been 15 pound gators that have had bad intentions for X Raps with gaudy colors. It’s often been said that blues are a bait shop owners best friend and after a drought anglers all across the Bay State coast are thirsting for these ferocious fighters. The other toothy affair that the Legit crew will be apart of again this year is the annual Monster Shark Tournament which will take place this weekend. Mark and the gang have done quite well in the past and even have finished first! While performing recon from Stellwagen Bank through the backside of the Cape, Mark has been encountering numerous tuna attacks, some of which have been as close as First Cliff on pogy schools.
