East Cape area canals

Trip Info

Loaded with a live well full of large shrimp we set off for East cape out of the Flamingo boat ramp just before sunrise. It wasn’t quite as cold as we were hoping for that morning but the water temperature was cool enough to bring the redfish into the deep water canal systems that wind through the East of East Cape. The tide had two hours until low. We began about a mile into the canal system using a trolling motor to slowly work the points of the canals. Using 6’6’’ custom rods with 3000 Penn Battles rigged with 10lbs Power pro with a 20lbs fluorocarbon leader with a 1/4 once jig head with a live shrimp. On the first two casts we simultaneously hooked up on a 27’’ redfish and a 24’’ snook. The morning proceeded to be action packed for the next few hours catching a total of 18 Redfish up to 29’’ and 2 snook. As an added bonus we got to see 6 American Crocodiles, one approximately 16’ long! What an amazing morning deep in Everglades National Park!
