Trip Summary
Last Saturday the Canaveral Kings crew entered a local tournament called the Central Florida Shootout. Our goal for the day was to catch some good eating fish for a Mother’s Day fish dinner, and hope to get lucky with a big one to bring to the scales. Our day started out in 260’ of water where we caught half a dozen amberjacks. With that species knocked off the list we moved a little further inshore to 240’ and caught some Gag Groupers, more amberjacks, and of course the ever elusive red snapper. The rest of our day was spent trolling for dolphin fish (mahi). We caught 2 barracudas 1 dolphin and lost a really nice 30-35 lber. Back at the scales none of our fish were winners but it was great to have a fun day catching some fish for ourselves (and moms) of course : )
Our fishing should stay good for the next couple of months. Bottom fishing has been better this year than it has been for a long time. We have been catching limits of amberjacks, some almaco jacks, gag groupers, and the occasional scamp grouper. For the trolling crowd the dolphin have showed up and a lot of the fish we are catching are nice gaffers (10 lbs of bigger). Also in the mix is a pretty good bite of sailfish.
