June & early July recap + tournament win

Trip Info

Go team. We out two more tournament trophies under our belt over the last few weeks and cashed a few nice checks as well! Big Kings were the ticket!

Fishing throughout the month of June proved a challenge. The winds have been light and out of the east and the seas have been very calm with steady north current. The last several weeks have been tough with the huge population of sharks off the coast devouring every good fish we have caught before getting them to the boat. The scattered weeds have been so bad in many cases that it’s near impossible to troll or move lures or live bait around so we have had to be creative in the methods. The first two weeks of the month were steady with sailfish on every trip with some dolphin and blackfin tunas on most trips. A mix of trolling small lures like jet heads or chuggers in the 3”-6” range has picked up the dolphin and blackfin tuna while the sailfish have all fallen victim to live bait including threadfin and goggle eyes. As the later part of the month moved in, so did the full moon phase which slowed down the bite.
The bonito have moved in in full force. These false albacore will eat basically anything, chunking dead bait or trolling small feather lures will guarantee steady action from 80-15 feet. Once you catch these fish you can chunk or chum them for a mix of bottom fish, larger bait fish such as speedo, or blue runners or even large bull sharks which seem to be anywhere from 80-120 feet.
There have been a lot of wahoo caught trolling this latter part of June so don’t be afraid to pull some bigger lures or even a split tail mullet around from 180-400 feet. A little faster seems to be the trick, 8-10 miles per hour is the ticket.
July is here and that means SHARK WEEK!
