I had a great family from Miami out fishing today on a picture perfect day. We started the day trolling for mahi offshore with no luck. Then we came back in to 130 ft of water on a nice color change and drifted bait. In 3 hours of drifting we caught 2 nice red grouper that were released, a couple of mutton snapper and a huge kingfish. The fish was 40 plus pounds. There were multiple free jumping sailfish around and lots of boats were hooked up on sailfish. Unfortunately we just didn’t get the sailfish bite today. What a show the kingfish put on. The fish took 3 ripping runs, and then dove down below the boat until finally he was tired out. The mom of the family hooked and landed this fish all on her own in 10 minutes. I was very impressed with her technique on the light spinning rod. There are multiple species of fish currently migrating through Miami. We are coming up to some of the best weeks of the year. Mahi, blackfin tuna, kingfish, sailfish, and sharks are all going to be migrating in good numbers in the coming weeks.
