Spanish Mackerel

We started out in the river near a great flat fishing Zman Trout Tricks around oyster beds. The trout seem to hit only when you let the bait sit still, moving only by the water’s movement. Then and only then - pow!  The bite would be powerful and on a medium lite Penn Rod, the fight was on! After five on and several that shook the hook off, the tide was high enough for us to pass over the sand and oyster bar blocking our entry to the flats! I climbed the push platform and used my 80 pound Minn kota I pilot to pull my 21 foot Hewes toward a depression I have fished many times. Upon our arrival we spot tails in the grass near our destination. We quickly put a special tied fly within the nose of one tailing fish. It was spooked and made the others follow its departure from the area. Moving on. we approached the hot spot by using the wind and found the opening holding Reds. Our Flies where placed perfectly and two great Reds were caught back to back, one 17” and the other 29”! You need to get on the books ASAP. May is close and always the kick off for some amazing tails on the low country Flats!
