In the past two weeks the tailing redfish that were on the flats in very shallow water moved out to slightly deeper water when the water levels fell slightly. As of this week the water came back up and in that result so did the fish. Right now the best catches are being found very close to the shorelines and even in some cases right along the edge of the shoreline. I have found that from time to time this happens when the wind blows as hard as it has been blowing this past month. Once I started fishing in shallower along the shorelines I also noticed that the redfish , the sea trout and even flounder are laying up in the sand holes especially the one surrounded by heavy grass. Most days I’m having the best success going back to the simple way of fishing with live shrimp free lined in the sand holes. However another date that seems to be working very well- jerkbaits in white or white and black. I like to rig these baits with weed less style weighted hooks- 4/0 wide gap hooks with 1/4 oz lead weight.

This not only works well with the red fish in the sea trout but also on the flounder as well. With the amount of hot weather that were receiving right now I expect the tarpon to show up very soon this year and boy oh boy I can’t wait. Tarpon are by far one of my favorite species to target and look forward to them every year. Last year they showed up at the end of the month of May and we actually had cooler weather last year so it wouldn’t surprise me if they showed up in the next couple of weeks, I will certainly keep my eyes and ears open and will report back when they show up so that we can start booking Tarpon trips.

The larger redfish that tend to show up this time of year seem to be a little bit behind schedule. I’ve been running the flats looking for them on a daily basis either before or after my trips so I’ll keep you posted on them as well keep your fingers crossed hopefully they’ll show up really soon.

Enclosing I can report that most days are yielding 5 – 7 redfish on redfish on quarter day trips with 10 to 15 redfish on half day trips.

April is fully committed right now with no chances for openings however May still has 10 days available so please call ASAP before they are gone.
