The Catch
Snapper (Red)

The much anticipated opening weekend of red snapper didn’t disappoint. There were a ton of boats out enjoying the near perfect weather.  The seas were calm and the fish were chewing!  We headed down the West beach towards Pensacola Beach and found the snapper right away.  Its important not to take too many fish from one spot in a single day to help preserve the population.  This is not only a good practice as far as being a responsible angler, but it ensures that spot will produce fish deep into the snapper season.  We managed to boat our limit of red snapper within a couple hours.  No monsters, but all good quality fish ranging from 18” to 25” and 4 pounds to 14.

The following day was another nice one.  We caught our limit quickly along with a bonus 10 pound trigger fish and a black snapper.  We had plenty of time, so we trolled around for a bit.  We hooked up on a King Mackerel, but he was able to shake the hook.  We ended up with a bonito and then pointed the bow North and headed home.  Hopefully everyday of snapper season is this easy!
