PLENTY OF STRIPED MARLIN & YELLOWFIN TUN
February 12, 2021 Russell 3 photos
Snapper fishing has remained some what consistent over the last while with school fish remaining in the bay longer than usual. Good snapper fishing has been had around the centre foul and on the sand in the middle of the bay. We can expect this to slow right down now and the snapper to move right up the harbours and estuaries in the coming month. Kingfish have remained tricky and inconsistent. The outer reefs still holding many sharks to ruin the fishing and the kingies in the bay being present but tricky. Mostly the bite is around tide change with a short bite time. Big game is in full swing though the weather is some what unsettled limiting days to get out wide. There are plenty of striped marlin and yellowfin tuna about to keep it interesting. The odd blue marlin and mahi-mahi being caught as well. Tight lines, SpotX Fishing Charters

MAY PUTPOURRI - Snapper gone deeper and
May 1, 2021
We definitely left summer the last week of the school holidays and we are already in the end of autumn! Sea life is preparing for winter which has its interesting challenges and great opportunities! The Bay of Islands has full range of fishing, we can not ask for much more! Let our fishing report inspire you to put a line in the water! Snapper fishing has continued to be patchy for the last month or so. There are still the small snapper everywhere though there are some fish of good quality in some of the deeper areas. We are often catching nice snapper when we are targeting kingies. The nice fish that were in the shallows have thinned out and are harder to find. Still some odd monsters that are amazing to watch, but better to leave for breeding! Kingie fishing is proving very challenging lately. There are plenty around though the bronze whalers are nearly always with them making it difficult to land those that are hooked. Hopefully the cooling water will slow the tax men down soon as it is concerning how many of these sharks are around. They are everywhere and has the charter fleet scratching is head as to what to do about this issue. Big game fishing is still going strong with plenty of striped marlin being caught in close and there is still a few yellowfin tuna about. Surprising to still be catching the yellowfin in May. At the moment the weather is great so get out there and have a go! Tight lines!!!
Good numbers of kingi, snapper and tuna
March 5, 2021
Fishing report from the Bay of Islands There have been some very nice snapper being caught up in the shallows on the sand banks in the inner bay. Plenty of pannies with some big ones among them. We recommend to target the big ones with live baits and you may pick up the odd kingfish as well. Kingfish have been in good numbers around the bait schools in the bay though the bronzies are often present as well. If the tax men show up you are better off going and finding a new spot as they will take all the kingies you hook. There are still fish on the outer reefs though the weather dictates whether or not you can fish these more exposed areas. Big game fishing has been good though stripeys seem a bit thin on the east coast. Having said that there are some nice stripeys being caught and a good number of blue marlin about. There is also a good number of yellowfin tuna, mahi-mahi and the odd short billed spear fish around. Fishing with lures rather than live baits is the go as you can cover more water and will get more variety. There is plenty of season to go so get out and have a go. Tight lines
