Some days just seem to work…others are just so so. The day was beautiful. We left the dock at 5:30 AM. The bait guys were out but still trying to catch bait. We had to wait a while for them to hook us up with live bait. I hate wasting jigging for bait when it is so much easier to buy.
The sun was coming up and the view was beautiful!!! Everything was calm and nice for motoring across the water.
We headed to the East about 25 miles and I ran across a spot that looked promising. We went back to take a look and found some natural bottom with some fish hanging out just waiting to be hooked. The first drop down produced a nice snapper. We hung out a while longer and the snapper became active…so did the other fish. We had hook ups with kings and even caught a lane snapper. All of a sudden a big hit and the fight was on. Javiar tried his best to get the fish to stop pulling drag but it finally broke off. When that happens it just leaves you wondering what it was. We didn’t think it was a shark because of how it was running.
We kept dropping down on the same spot and finally…another big hit!! This one started pulling drag also so Javiar just played it in until it came to the surface. The catch looked like a shark from the stop but when we saw the tail we knew it was a very large cobia. He didn’t want to be dinner so he fought very hard. Alas he gave it up and let us gaff him to take him home for dinner.
Everyone caught fish and they were excited when we hit the dock and pulled out all the nice fish. After cleaning up the fish Javiar and his family took home a nice Yeti cooler full of snapper, king and cobia.
I can hardly wait to do it all over again tomorrow.
