King Mackerel (Kingfish)

The forecast for the weather was 20% chance of rain with 1’ seas or less.  Yup, they got it wrong again!!!  When we got out through the Destin Pass there were storms all around us.  The bait boats were working hard to try to get bait but they were not having any luck.  We tried using a sabiki rig to get some bait but the baits were not cooperating either!!  After an hour we finally got a scoop of bait from the bait boat and tried to head to the spot I had picked for today’s fishing.  The seas were 2-3 ft/ very large swells. The first person became sick and started tossing cookies.  Later the other 2 in the party became a little queezy.  We motored to a few spots to try to bottom fish and caught an AJ but it was out of season and not 34”.  Later we tried to troll for king mackerel and had several hits.  One came up to the boat but broke off before we could get him gaffed.  As I looked around I could see large storms building in the Gulf.  There was no lightening but the swells were getting bigger so we opted to come in and grab a bite to eat at one of the local favorites…Dewey Destin’s Crab Island.  Awesome!!

The highlight of the day was seeing Santa Clause fishing.  He must have taken a break from the North Pole to come down to enjoy the Florida sunshine.  (see pictures).

Not ever day is good when you are fishing but any bad day on the water is better than any good day at work!!!
