From the Captain's Log: 7/22/16
Today started out with heavy rain at the marina with more due south in the gulf. The Weeks crew was not too concerned with a little rain so we pushed off around 6 with and headed to the west.
We spotted a some floating debris that was holding a nice triple tail and some chicken dolphin (mahi). They didn’t want any artificial, so we free lined squid and cut cigar minnow to get some hook ups. We managed 5 mahi and unfortunately spooked the triple tail.
We pushed on further west a few miles, put out some diving lures and trolled for kings. We had a double hookup on two solid kings within 5 minutes. From there we kept hooking into bonito, barracuda, jack crevalle or amberjack. We had one bonito hooked and coming to the boat and a big barracuda smashed it, jumping completely out of the water. It was very cool to watch, unfortunately the bonito didn’t make it.
We switched to bottom fishing the last couple hours. We caught more AJ’s, barracuda and a nice mingo and lanes snapper. After the chum pulled the mangrove snapper off the bottom, we began free lining some cut cigar minnows behind the boat. It was a slow bite, but we managed a few mangroves before we had to call it quits.
There were some nice fish caught today and some even nicer ones that didn’t make it to the boat. I had a great time with the crew today, I’m glad everyone got to catch a good variety of fish and can’t wait to do it again.
