Big Cobia Surprise

The Catch

It started out like most other six hour trips.  We made a stop at a known King Mackerel spot to kick things off.  After boating a few Macs we spotted a Cobia lurking just below the surface.  I sent the deck hand up into the tower to get a better look.  After only two casts he hooked up on a solid “brown bomber”.  The fight was on!  Due to the fact we hooked him up on a lighter rod we chased him all over the place making sure he didn’t get tangled in a nearby structure.  After a solid 25 minute battle we were able to put a gaff in him and get him on the deck.  He was bigger than he looked and didn’t exactly fly over the rail at 50 pounds.  Either way, we got him in the box and it was high fives all around.  It was a great day and there was plenty of Cobia steaks to go around.  The staff at AJs on the Bayou in Fort Walton Beach did a great job of cooking them up for the crew.  It doesn’t get much fresher than that!
