Trip Info

Jesse, of Ocean Stinger Fishing Charters, reports that nearshore the spanish mackerel bite has really turned on over the past couple of weeks. Schools of fish have started to stack up around Masonboro and the inlets in 25-30’ of water. Trolling Clarkspoons (pink/silver) and small Yo-Zuris have provided action from the fish, and trolling behind a #1 planer or trolling weight will get the lure down deep enough. Offshore, the Tuna and Wahoo bite has picked up, and it seems to be better to the north along the temperature breaks on the shelf. Most of the action has been north of the Same Ol’ Hole and points north along ledges in 40-60 fathoms. The tuna bite has also picked up. Troll Fathom Offshore rigs in black/purple and solid green to connect with the Blackfins. Last week we caught 15 Tuna ranging from 10-28 lbs. Half pint skirt rigs have worked best in pink/white, green/yellow, and black/purple. There have been sailfish reports in the same areas as the Wahoo and tuna, and the billfish have fallen for naked ballyhoo skipping across the water on circle hook rigs on 40 lbs 30 ft leaders. Offshore, the wahoo bite is hot around the Steeples and the Same Ol’ Hole. The fish have shown up early this year, and they can be expected to stay through November. There are a few dolphin in the mix, along with sailfish hook-ups when targeted. Medium and medium/large ballyhoo is the bait of choice while pulling 7/0 or 8/0 wired ballyhoo rigs. Fast trolling Fathom Offshore rigs in purple/black, blue/black, and red/black has been very successful in hooking up with the migratory species. Fishing the Gulf Stream has yielded blackfin tuna, mahi, and sailfish. Mahi are being caught in large numbers, and trolling with Fathom Offshore’s Half Pint in purple/white/black and pink/white has been working on the dolphin, as well as the blackfins. Casting topwater plugs like the Williamson Jet Pro when the blackfins surface has resulted in several hookups. Early morning and early evening is the prime time to fish the Stream, and mahi are holding in deep water during mid-day.
