Wow what a month!
Wow what a month!
Not sure where to start really but I guess lets start off by listing what species we have been catching over the last few weeks: kingfish, snapper, john dory, black marlin, striped marlin, yellowfin tuna, mahi mahi, trevally and kahawai.
This has been one of the craziest months of fishing I have had in NZ for quite some time. We have had days where instead of hooking kingfish on live baits we have hooked striped marlin. One day we caught a black marlin in 35m of water while targeting kingi’s! Yellowfin tuna have been boated and even snapper have been hooked in 85 meters of water on surface trolled live baits!!!!!!! This makes for exciting fishing and late February and March are the months that anything can and will happen out at the Mokohinau islands.
The Hen and Chicks and Bream Bay area has been fishing well. Limit bags of snapper and john dory amongst the mix. April and May should see some very big kingfish moving into the Hen and Chicks area and the surface feeding trevally schools are always a great place to start with trolling live baits and topwater casting.
The month of March has seen the kingfish size jump up. We have been targeting the really big fish on 2-3kg kahawai live baits and we have boated some in the high 20kg range and a few very big fish that we have not been able to stop even on 80lb stand up marlin gear showing the true power of these great fish. Topwater fishing has been very good and consistently raising a lot of fish most days out.
April and May see us starting our overseas Offshore Adventures and for the first two weeks of April we will be fishing in Oman for monster GT’s in the 50kg size range. From there we relocate to Costa Rica for blue marlin, sailfish and rooster fish and then we will be moving to Nicaragua to fish the Caribbean coast for giant tarpon.
This year at the Auckland boat show Tony will be at the Extreme Boats stand showing off the 850 centre cab so please drop in and say hi. The boat will be rigged with all the latest fishing tackle from topwater, jigging, live baiting and marlin fishing including dredges and teasers. Check out the latest electronics from Garmin he is using to find the fish and the great thing with what Tony is doing is there are no scerets, so drop on in and check out what he is up too.
A few days after the boat show is finished Tony then departs for Cabo San Lucas, Mexico where 16 New Zealand anglers will fishing the amazing waters off Cabo for striped marlin.
We will be back into our NZ charters on the 2nd of June. We still have a few dates free for June and July so get in quick as these months are great months for XXL kingfish out at the Mokohinau islands.
Keep up to date with our overseas Offshore Adventures on FaceBook.
Hope to see you at the boat show and we will be running trips to the Mokohinau islands again on the 2nd of June.
