Early April Fishing Report

Trip Info

Fishing the first week of April has been a challenge, yet exciting. The first week brought the full moon phase along with it, making the pelagic bite slow down. This is common around the full moon here in SE Florida. We have seen a good mix of Kingfish show up and have been holding shallow in about 70-90 feet from Palm Beach up to Jupiter. Bump trolling live blue runners and goggle eyes have been getting bites especially during the first few hours of daylight. The dolphin fishing as not been up to par with what is expected this time of year, however, the fish being caught are on the large size. These bigger bulls and cows (female) are swimming solo and not in big schools as we are used to seeing. Our bigger dolphins are coming under the kite on live goggle eyes in deeper water, about 250-350 feet.
Now onto sailfish, our personal favorite fish to target. The sail bite continues to be good as we are seeing sails and catching them on a regular basis on our charters. The sails seem to be in packs so we’re seeing a lot of multiple hookups. Saturday we had 4 hit at once and Sunday we had 3 double headers! This is exciting action for customers and first timers who have never caught a sail. They put on quite a show when they jump like crazy. The sailfish are only taking live baits either slow trolled or under a kite and seem to be mixed in around 90-120 feet and deeper in 230-290 feet from Boynton to north of Jupiter. It looks like we will have a steady SE wind for a while which should keep these fish around the area. Expect the seas to be a bit bumpy but the fishing should be worth it.
The bottom bite is good for mutton snapper this month also, fresh cut bait or small live baits are getting bit with consistency in about 80-140 feet and the bonus cobia are moving through also for the spring run. We use 40 pound leader with a small #5 wire trace to a 6/0 circle hook. This helps with king and wahoo bites that happen while bottom fishing and the wire never hurts our mutton bites.
