The bite is on Nearshore and Offshore
May 21st FISHING REPORT:
Nearshore We are catching Spanish Mackerel in the range of beach front to 40ft of water has been producing solid numbers of fish for us. Early morning is the best time. Troll anywhere from 7-9 knots using #1 planners and small clarkspoons rigged on long light leaders. They’re feeding on very small glass minnows, so you got to match the hatch to catch them. The bait has been very abundant close to shore. We have been catching king mackerel 15-25 miles off Wrightsville Beach. Look for bait for suspended bait marks. Running spoons off the down riggers and cigar minnow rigs trolled slow has been working good. Look of working birds and/or fish breaking the surface chasing bait. King Mackerel bite is good around the 15-25 miles off Beach. Pulling Drone spoons on #2 planners with 40ft 50lbs floro carbon leaders are working great right now. Good colors have been sliver/green in the early morning, sliver/blue, around mid day the sliver/gold, sliver/yellow around sun set.I try hard to match the bait color to the water color.
Bottom Fishing Grouper season open now. Bottom fishing for grouper has been pretty good over structure in the 22-24 mile range. Bottom rigs baited with squid or cigar minnows have been working really well.
Gulfstream we are catching nice Wahoo, Blackfin Tuna and Mahi-Mahi and the occasional Sailfish There are really goods sign of bait in the stream now. We are catching all of our fish over structure while trolling 6.5-8.0 knots. Fishing the temp break lines and look for the blue and aqua water color. That is were you will find the fish! We have been fishing 150ft-250ft for Blackfin Tuna and Mahi Mahi. Trolling for Black fin and Mahi were are pulling Fathom Half Pints (pink/white/sliver head) (blue/sliver flying fish), Green Machines, Pink UV squid teasers set in the choppy water out to the prop wash will produce the Blackfin, Mahi and the occasional Sailfish bite. There have been reports of Yellow fin being caught in the same areas in the stream.
