I will just stick with the facts here:
- was told to arrive at 630am, did so
- after 30 mins sitting around we were finally led to the boat
- captain asked what we want to fish for, we answered tuna and marlin.ย He told us tuna was not possible on a half day trip due to distance out to sea, and that marlin fishing was too slow to pursue.ย This needs to be made clear in the booking process.ย At this point the trip was a letdown, we shrugged and said ok whatever you think is best.
- captain advised roosterfish and that we would need to then buy extra live bait beyond what was anticipated, doesnโt feel great to be upsold at this point but fine, whatโs another $20 when youโre dropping $600 on a half day of fishing
- we finally depart and head to the live bait guy who says he is all out of stock because โweโ are late.ย Captain asks me what we want to do.ย I didnโt pay $600 to come fish in an unfamiliar place, to be asked to deal with situations like this
- he negotiates for a few live fish and some dead ones
- we motor out around the point and drop lines, caught 1 roosterfish immediately, which is fun for our 6 year old.ย Let it go as they arenโt good eating.
- after 2 hours of no action, we head back towards Cabo.ย We spot a couple of sharks near the surface.ย Captain was skilled in hooking them.ย One broke off, landed the other, a 3 foot hammerhead.ย Let it go.ย Exciting for the 6 year old.
- headed back to the dock and got out of there
I guess this comes down to expectations.ย As a seasoned freshwater fly fisherman this trip was mostly a letdown, on the other hand the 6 year old had a great time.ย Having done similar trips in cabo and caught multiple tuna and marlin on a day trip, this was a huge letdown.ย So, I guess it comes down to expectations.ย If you want to catch tuna and marlin you should make that very clear during the booking process and be prepared to either commit to a full day or simply not book if they say this wonโt be possible.ย Given that almost anyone who is shelling out $600 to fish for a half day in Cabo is likely to expect to catch tuna and marlin, it would be good for the outfitter to make it very clear during booking process whether this is an option or not.
And, show up on time, and have a plan.
