Please understand this is a review of our fishing experience on the Osprey Yacht Charter or, more importantly, the lack of the fishing experience. May this review serve for that only and not for our overall experience of the Osprey Yacht.
First, and most important, we spent the entire 3/4 day looking for fish, not actually fishing. While we realize this sometimes happens, it was interesting to all of us on the boat that during the entire day we stopped only twice for a total of approximately 30 minutes each trying to catch fish. There were four of us on this charter and only one person during the entire day picked up a fishing pole, and the two times he briefly threw his line in, he did not get a bite, nor even a nibble. Please note that a few hours into the trip, we were advised to sit on the lower level of the boat to โwatch the poles and wait for a fish to biteโ and Greg, the boatโs first mate, instructed us to call him if any of the lines began to move. We ended up just watching poles for more than 4 hours that day. The other 4 hours were spent sailing with no fishing.
I am a bit confused as I thought I was booking a fishing charter and not just a really nice boat ride. I have to wonder exactly how experienced both Captain Art and Greg are with catching fish. We sailed around both US and Mexico waters for more than 8 hours and never got a nibble. I guess they tried to catch a fish for us by keeping two fishing lines constantly in the water, trolling at surface level with lures on each. The actual fishing experience was not to be had this day.
Since we were not having any luck the two times we stopped briefly to try and fish Captain Art decided we would go into Mexico to see if we could catch any fish there. Within 15 minutes of this decision, he changed his mind again and said we could not go into Mexico since we did not have a Mexico fishing license. This fishing license issue was discussed with Captain Art a few days before the trip, the evening prior to our trip and again the morning of the trip. We were more than happy to purchase this additional license if need be and had time to do so. During all of these conversations, Captain Art instructed us not to obtain a Mexico fishing license. The fact that he wanted to go into Mexico waters after all of our discussions came as a complete surprise to us. When we questioned this, Captain Art advised us โnot to worry about the Mexican license since they donโt check frequently and we would be okay going into Mexico watersโ.ย However, at this point, we were already in Mexico and I knew this since all of us received a text message from our cell phone carriers stating we had entered Mexico.
The Osprey Yacht is a beautiful and spacious boat, and Captain Art and Greg are very nice. All of us did enjoy sailing for the dayโฆbut we were there to fish and unfortunately, I cannot review something that did not happen.
We are sharing our experience to let people know that if they are looking for a charter to sail the waters of San Diego with a hospitable Captain and first mate, then this is the boat for that.ย However, the actual fishing part is suspect and I believe that having a staff that knows how to do this this is particularly important. Unfortunately, I paid for a day of fishing and sadly, this did not happen.
Again, this is a fishing experience review and not a personal review of the Captain and his crew. Our party of four was extremely disappointed in this fishing experience and even more so once we read the San Diego fishing report at 1AM Tuesday morning to see that H&M Landing boats caught more than four hundred fish of six varied species that day.
