My husband let me complete this review because my experience during this charter was different from his. There were four of us for the trip - my husband, myself, our daughter and son-in-law. We are not tourists that want to ride a boat and see the pretty fish - we are a tournament fishing family with all of us participating in ALL fishing activities - yes, even the girls! We enjoy charting while on vacation so that we may have the opportunity to fish for species we don’t normally get to see or experience often off our coast….thus the first excursion we planned for our Costa Rica trip was an all-day fishing charter.
Without listing each incident that ultimately had me wishing the charter would just END so I could get off the boat….I will say this charter is geared toward MEN ONLY. Women, in the eyes of the Captain and First Mate, do not posses the knowledge, skills or strength to angle a fish. I was made to feel, more than once, inferior to the other fisherman aboard not only by their actions but also by verbal statements - even though my husband tried to explain more than once my level of experience and skill. I conceded to the sexism and spend the majority of the day sitting and watching the dolphins - all the while my husband apologizing and feeling bad for me….but we had already paid for the charter (Captain asked for the money as soon as we boarded) so I didn’t want to ruin what could be salvaged.
That aside, we got into a pretty good Tuna bite which of course had the Captain excited….I did not educate myself on CR fishing limits/laws but our charter quickly turned into a commercial fishing excursion with a large amount of Tuna being placed in the fishbox - some being of questionable size. I’m sure they considered it a bonus to get paid for a full-day charter and then turn around and double that by commercial fishing.
Bottom line - if you are a man reading this review that has a true lady angler you plan on bringing along…this is not the charter for you - she will NOT be included (in the Captain’s defense, he did offer to let me angle a fish….but held on to the rod until he got to the leader). If you are a woman reading this review - move along sister….trust me, not worth the time or the money!
