Well, this trip could have been 5 star and it only would have taken a tiny bit more effort from captain pollo. The charter was $500. We pre-tipped $50 at 630am in hopes that it would be appreciated and result in good service. However, captain pollo didnโt seem to appreciate it. Btw, Capt pollo doesnโt come with the boat. He has a crew of 2 who operate the boat. These guys are greatโฆwe tipped them another $100 when we returned to the dock (as it was clear that captain pollo pocketed the $50 for himself). We caught a good amount of fish, nothing spectacular or trophy-esk, but overall super happy with the catch. Since we did well (it was just my wife and I on the charter) we decided to head in a couple of hours early (thinking, letโs save these guys some fuel, letโs make this trip a good margin trip for the crew, and letโs let everyone get home early). ....our.catch was NEVER on ice, (crew brought no ice for the fish!!!...wtf???!) and none of the fish were bled, so I was worried about the quality of the catch and didnโt want to stay out too long with our catch not on ice. Long story shortโฆas soon as we are back at the dock, itโs, โsee ya! โ From the crew. Absolutely zero help with processing the fish, captn pollo is not there, and when I do call, he is not very helpful, and has no real adviceโฆ.only that he can have a friend come โlaterโ to charge us $2/lb if we want to vaccuum seal. I say, Ok fineโฆcome vacuum seal pleaseโฆ.But no one comes. So I tip the locals there to clean the fish for us and bag it. Overall I learned a valuable lessonโฆyou canโt rely on the captain/operator to do much more than get you on the boat. Knowing that, Iโll be better prepared for the next trip. (Maybe this is โjust how it is down hereโ, and I shouldnโt complainโฆand so be it, but for newbies looking to get some fish in Cabo, keep all this in mind))
Note to Capt pollo: Bring Ice for your clients fish. Be there when they return to help them process, or at least have a conversation on the dock before the boat leaves to find out what the client wants. Not all travellers to baja are rich americans that throw money aroundโฆ.some of us actually want good value for what we spend. We felt like we were treated like just another group of cash register cowsโฆand it only would have taken maybe 15 minutes of your day to change that, and make our experience wonderful. Hopefully you take this adviceโฆyouโll get alot more business if you do.
