Bottom fishing is a simple, hands-on way to catch fish that live near the bottom. You drop bait down, feel the bite, and set the hook. It is steady, relaxing, and great when you want action and a tasty target.

This technique can bring in a wide range of species. In saltwater, anglers often catch Snapper, Grouper, Black Seabass, Triggerfish, Halibut, and Cod. In fresh water, common targets include Catfish, Carp, and Walleye. Wrecks, reefs, rocks, and channel edges are classic spots for many of these fish.

The basics are easy. Rig a weight so your bait reaches the bottom and stays there. Use natural bait like squid, shrimp, or cut bait, or a jig that taps the bottom. You can fish from a pier, beach, or boat. Stay at anchor to work one spot, or drift to cover ground. Keep the line tight and lift when you feel taps.

Expect a calm pace with bursts of action. Beginners and families like it because the steps are clear. Experienced anglers enjoy fine-tuning rigs and hunting bigger fish around structure. Bring sun protection, water, and non-marking shoes. Pack snacks and a small cooler if allowed. Many trips include tackle, but ask ahead about rods, bait, and ice, and dress for spray and wind.
